How to apply for Japan's Government scholarship for Master's Degree and research programs

Japan government offers scholarships for international students to do research in various fields. In this article I gave details about the eligibility criteria for giving scholarships, fields of study to which scholarship will be given, scholarship details, how to apply for the scholarship etc.


The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) encourages research programs through scholarships to international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as research students(either non-degree or degree students) under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program.

Here are ten best study abroad scholarships for higher studies in international universities

Scholarship details

Scholarship duration is two years from April or one and half year from October. The scholarship benefits include a monthly allowance of Yen 143,000, free tuition fees, and one return air ticket.

Eligibility criteria to join Master's Degree or Research program with scholarships

  1. For Research student/Master's Degree

    A student must have a Bachelor's degree in relevant field with minimum 65% marks. The candidates should obtain their mark sheet and degree on or before 31st March 2017 for April 2017 batch and 30th September 2017 for October 2017 batch. Scholarships will be given on merit basis in any of the above fields of research in Japanese universities.
  2. Research Student/Master's degree in Japanese Language

    Students who have completed Bachelor's degree / Master's degree course in Japanese Language from a recognized university are eligible for scholarship program. Students who have completed Bachelor's degree course in any subject from a recognized university and then obtained N2 Certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) conducted by the Japan Foundation are also eligible to apply for scholarship scheme.
  3. Ph.D. degree in Japanese Language

    Students who have obtained a Master's Degree in Japanese language from any recognized university can apply for this scholarship program. The candidates should obtain their mark sheet and degree on or before 31st March 2017 for April 2017 batch and 30th September 2017 for October 2017 batch.

Age Limit

Applicants must be below 35 years of age (i.e. born on or after April 2, 1982).

How to apply for the Scholarship

Candidates who wish to do their Master's course or Ph.D Degree or research in Japanese universities with scholarship can download the Application Form from the website :-
The duly filled in Application Form with all relevant documents should be sent to the following address directly so as to reach on or before 25th May, 2016.
Applicant should read the Guide lines given in the above website carefully before applying scholarship for Master's program or Ph.D program for research. Candidate has to submit Application form, Study program and Placement Preference Form along with mentioned relevant documents as below.
  1. Certificate of X class (for proof of date of birth)

  2. Certified grade transcript for each semester/year from under graduate level to the last acquired qualification (indicate the conversion of grades into percentage)

  3. Certificate/degree from under graduate level to the last acquired qualification

  4. Abstracts of theses
