Summer school for children (8 to 15 years) conducted by British Council of India in Kolkata-2016

The concept of summer camps/workshops is slowly gaining ground in Kolkata. Various camps and workshops are being organized all over the city with the aim to teach children some skills which will be beneficial for them in future. The British Council of India runs a three weeks summer school course for young learners. The course is delivered in an interactive way with the aim to improve the confidence in using the language. The course provides theme-based activities designed to develop language skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening), vocabulary and pronunciation. The theme for summer 2016 is 'Shakespeare'. The participants will be introduced to different plays of Shakespeare and will get the opportunity to experiment with drama and theatre. The project work will definitely be different from the normal school routine and will definitely encourage creativity, communication and team-working skills.

Communicating clearly and confidently in English

The course is designed to give the learners opportunity to interact and participate fully in lessons which are interesting, and will enable them to use meaningful language in meaningful activities. The use of context, real-life situations and functional language would definitely help the learners to practice effectively. The learners will work in pairs and in groups, which will prepare them for real-life communication.

Developing fluency

During the programme, the learners will be encouraged to speak as much English as possible to activate the knowledge which they have already acquired so that they are able to speak English as fluently as possible.

Developing communicative competencies

In the course, Listening, speaking, reading and writing will be effectively integrated with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to help the learners develop the skills to effectively communicate. Different media (visual, audio, computer based) will be used to make lessons motivating and interesting. The teachers will be pro-active, co-operative and mistakes on the part of participants will be treated as a natural part of learning.

Date and venue

This summer programme will be held from 16th May, 2016 to 3rd June, 2016 (Monday to Friday). The children will be divided in three groups according to their age. The first group will include kids between 8 years to 10 years. The second group will consist of children in the age group of 11 years to 12 years. The third group will consist of children between 13 years to 15 years. The classes will be held at Mahadevi Birla World Academy, Park Circus, Kolkata and British Council, Camac Street, Kolkata. Course fee

The course fee is Rs. 8000/- per participant payable by cash, card(Visa/Master), cheque or Demand Draft.
