Where to study fashion in The Big Apple or London

It is well known that after Italy, New York and London fashion schools are top destinations for students and professionals interested in learning about fashion design, textiles, fashion journalism, fashion management, merchandising and more.

London and New York are home to prestigious fashion design schools, where students can benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, interactions with top industry leaders, valuable internships, and the presence of big names in fashion design and fashion journalism in the cities. Here is a look at top fashion schools in the two cities, where Indian students who want to study abroad in the heart of the fashion industry can consider applying.

Fashion Schools in New York

The Big Apple is home to two top schools – The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Parsons, The New School for Design.

FIT is known in the industry as the fashion industry's MIT. It boasts of alumni such as Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Calvin Klein and other luminaries. Programs on offer at the School of Art and Design include:
  • Fashion Design
  • Textile or Surface Design
  • Jewellery Design
  • Menswear
  • Fabric Styling
  • Accessories Design among others
. Course fees for international students is $US8,185.

Parsons is widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious art and design schools. It is ranked number one in the US for art and design. Not surprisingly, its alumni include designers like Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Prabal Gurung, Isaac Mizrahi, Jason Wu, Anna Sui, Donna Karan of DKNY among others. Tuition is US$39,280 per year. The school has a strong alumni network, and critique workshops are held where Proenza Schouler designers and Donna Karan offer students a chance to assess their work. The school has several corporate partners and most faculty members are fashion industry insiders, making it the ideal environment for a student of fashion to launch their career.

Another recommended New York School is the Pratt Institute.

Fashion Schools in London

Vibrant London is home to fashionable people and also three top fashion schools that vie with New York's schools for top global rankings.

The University of the Arts London's (UAL) design school Central Saint Martins has produced designers like Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane. It was ranked number one in the world for overall score and global influence by the Business of Fashion magazine in 2015. It offers programs in:
  • Fashion design
  • Jewellery design
  • Textile

It is partly funded by the government, and is home to a world class faculty. Undergraduate fees are around 15,180 GBP for international students.

London College of Fashion offers a great range of programs including merchandising, buying, journalism, marketing, cosmetic science, beauty, fashion curation and others in addition with traditional fashion design courses. It is also a part of UAL, and tuition fees are the same as Central Saint Martins. Jimmy Choo is a famous alumnus.

Royal College of Art London is highly regarded for its graduate-level design courses. It is home to six schools where enrollment numbers are smaller than in the other London schools, making it an elite school with higher tuition. However the school gives students the chance to build their careers and earn placements in top global fashion houses like Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Givenchy etc. Well-known alumni include Ossie Clark, Phillip Treacy and Zandra Rhodes.

Other universities offering fashion programs in London worth considering are Kingston University and the University of Westminster.

Apart from universities in London and New York there are institutions across the globe that offer courses in fashion designing. Some off-beat locations are also popular for study abroad courses in fashion
