How to apply for paid internship programs for international students in Japan

Are you looking for paid internship opportunities abroad in Japan? This article provides complete information about the internship program offered by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Government of Japan for Indian and other international students. You will get complete details about the financial support you will get as part of the internship program, the eligibility requirements to apply and the application procedure.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Government of Japan, is offering about 100 internships to get work experience in private sector companies, industry associations and non-profit corporations in Japan. It is a paid internship program but should not be considered as actual employment.

About the internship program

The internship program will provide for the following:
  1. 3,500 yen/day for accommodation

  2. A round-trip economy class air ticket

  3. Travel insurance (note that if you are an international student already in Japan, then you are not eligible for this insurance)

  4. Internship insurance

  5. Preliminary training courses

Intern recruitment details

The information sessions for internship recruitment will be conducted in various cities in the following countries:
  1. Vietnam

  2. Indonesia

  3. Thailand

  4. Malaysia

  5. India

  6. China

  7. Japan

Information sessions to recruit host companies will be held in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sendai and Sapporo.

Internship period

  1. For international students in Japan: 20th September to 21st November.

  2. For overseas foreign nationals: 27th September to 21st December or 14th October to 28th December.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Nationality: You must be having citizenship of an eligible country or region.

  2. Age: You should be at least 20 years of age. Maximum age limit is 40 years.

  3. Education qualification: You should have a valid school or university enrolment or graduation certificate as well as a letter of recommendation from an affiliated university or institute.

  4. Language skills: You should be proficient in Japanese language (JLPT level N3 or higher) or have proficiency in English.

  5. Work requirements:
    • You should be able to undertake both the internship and the preliminary training on a full-time basis at the host company and be able to manage it alongside your academics if studying.

    • Through the internship you will be expected to work toward constructing networks with overseas universities and help towards developing international business of Japanese companies.

    • You should be able to fulfil any other requirements meeting any individual conditions stipulated by the host company where you will do the internship.

Selection process

Candidates will be selected on the basis of application content, aptitude and experience.

Short-listed candidates will then go through a further selection process consisting of:
  1. Screening of documents

  2. Primary interview – native language / English / Japanese

  3. Secondary interview – Japanese / English

On completion of interviews, you need to submit the following:
  1. All certificates pertaining to university qualifications, language skills, etc

  2. Letters of recommendation

  3. Photographs

  4. Documents required for Visa

  5. Medical questionnaire

The Program Office will notify host companies and as an intern applicant you will be matched to a host company. Once your internship is matched with a host company, a contract among the Program Office, host company and you will be finalized to define the rules and obligations of your internship acceptance.


The host company will contact you. Once the schedule and other aspects of the internship is decided upon, the host company will report the internship plan online to the Program Office.

The Program Office will confirm the following: (i) The content and achievable results of the internship plan fulfils the requisite intent of the program; (ii) The mission and commitment of the host company's intern officers have clarity.
