LLM in Maritime Law programme features

The faculty are qualified Members of the Institute of Maritime Law, an internationally leading maritime law institute as well as an integral part of the university's Southampton Law School. The aim of the programme is to equip you with the professional skills to be able to take up legal cases, advise and negotiate based on the current rules of Admiralty and international trade. The programme incorporates seminars, lectures, tutorials and independent study under guidance.

You are given the option to select 4 maritime or commercial modules as per your interests and future career goals. There is also a mandatory dissertation.



Duration

The LLM in Maritime Law programme is of 1 year duration and will begin in September 2016.

Learning modules

You need to complete 180 CATS and 60 CATS is awarded for the LLM dissertation. You can thus choose modules in total completing 120 CATS. The Modules are as follows:

Note: The module of Internet law is not offered any more.

How assessment is done

There will be assessed and non-assessed written work, with feedback being provided, including for dissertation drafting. Various assignments and formal exams will assess your skills & abilities vis-à-vis what you learned. Note that oral capabilities will not provide significant weighting of marks towards the degree, but will provide a source of feedback to you on your communications skills.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Academic qualification: You must have an upper second class Bachelors Degree in Law or a degree having a substantial legal component.   2. English language requirement: You should have an overall 7 IELTS score with 6 in each of the components of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Course fee and scholarships

The course fee for the LLM in Maritime Law programme is £15920. As an international student, you can avail of a scholarship of £3,000 which will be in the form of a reduction in the tuition fee.
