You can apply for the Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine. The Government of India and he Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) had jointly launched the Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research. The aim of the focus is to encourage industrial research in academic institutes, at the same time developing an individual's leadership qualities & provide an opportunity to gain knowledge & expertise in international innovations & practices.

Scholarship features

Number of scholarships: up to 100 each year.

Scholarship award: up to Rs.8.7 lakh per annum per candidate. 50% of this will come from the Government and 50% from the partner company.

Duration: The scholarship will be given for a maximum period of 4 years.

Areas covered by the scholarship: Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine.

Eligibility requirements

  1. You must be a full time Ph.D. scholar in any recognized Indian university or institution or research laboratory.

  2. The date of your Ph.D. registration should not be more than 14 months from the date of submission of your application.

  3. You must have a valid industry partner who would be ready to support the research project financially as well as provide guidance and mentorship.

  4. The mutually agreed topic of research between you and the supporting company should be innovative, have practical relevance and industrial application.

  5. You should be willing to work with or in the supporting company as and when required during the duration of the project.

Project selection parameters

  • The project must be innovative.

  • The project should be of high scientific merit with R&D (as opposed to exploratory investigation).

  • Your academic guide, industry mentor and you should all be having a strong academic/R&D track record.

How to apply

  3. Enter into a collaboration with a company, acquiring the requisite undertakings signed from a valid signatory in that company as well as in the host institute.

  4. Make digital copies of each of the documents required to be submitted with your application.

  5. Fill up the online application form.

  6. Submit your application online.

Note: You cannot download the application form. It needs to be filled up online only. You should not send any physical copies of the documents or any application to CII.

Last date to apply

As such, there is no last date. You can apply for the scheme at any time during the year. The only condition is that you should have registered for fulltime PhD in the last 14 months from the date of submission of application in any recognized Indian University / Institute / Research Laboratory.

The Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research is a public-private partnership (PPP) between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Under the scheme up to 100 new Fellowships are granted every year and the full-time PhD scholars generally get double the amount that is available for doing research under any other scheme like the JRF/SRF schemes. Presently, a total of 55 companies spread all across the world are partners in the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme. These include 49 Indian companies and 6 international companies. As of now, 67 candidates are receiving the Prime Minister’s Fellowship spread over 33 institutes across ten states out of which 21 are female candidates and remaining 46 are male candidates.
