Introduction
GATE score is being used as one of the criteria for recruitment in Government organizations like the Cabinet Secretariat, DRDO, BARC and various National/State Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India. Recruitment in the PSU sector by using GATE score started in the year 2012. The Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) was the first PSU to introduce this system in the year 2012 followed by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited two years later. In the year 2015, about 36 PSUs had signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the GATE organizing committee, for using GATE 2015 score as a screening tool for recruiting engineers at entry level positions and the number rose to more than 40 companies in the year 2016. Generally, the recruitment notifications are issued by these companies right after GATE notification mentioning that the aspiring candidates have to appear in the GATE examination to be considered for a job on receipt of their applications.Public Sector Undertaking (PSU)

The PSUs including few other Government organizations use GATE score for screening/short-listing of the candidates for further selection process which generally comprises Group Discussion (GD) & Group Task (GT) and Personal Interviews (PI) etc. The eligibility criteria including eligible engineering disciplines, age limit, reservation of posts, admissible concessions/ relaxations and detailed selection procedure etc. are mentioned in the detailed recruitment advertisements/notifications issued by the respective Government organizations. The candidates may look for such notifications in the 'careers' section of the website and thoroughly study the same before proceeding ahead. It may be noted that a separate application has to be submitted for separate companies as advised in their respective notifications.
GATE score is a one-in-all key for higher education or employment. I feel that many students have not still understood the purpose and significance of GATE in its full scope. GATE helps avoid multiple tests and thus saves precious time and resource for the student/candidate as well as the organizations and institutions. It is almost similar but more relevant and more useful than the similar IBPS test in the banking system.
This article gives a reasonably good list(though not complete) of the fields and major organizations for employment where the eligibility is based on GATE score.
The students who will soon be prospective candidates, should take it in the proper spirit and work well in unison for the academics as well as for GATE from the beginning of the course itself.
