The scheme aims to link the farmers of India with those associated with the science field.

About Biotech-KISAN

Biotech-KISAN is a scientist-farmer partnership scheme for agriculture innovation through participatory research. The goal of this scheme is to connect science laboratories with the farmers of the country in order to discover and develop innovative solutions and technologies which would be applied at the farm level.

What the scheme offers

The Biotech-KISAN scheme will provide funding to set up a Biotech-KISAN hub in the 15 agro-climatic zones of India. Each hub will be in charge of a leader, who will act as the Facilitator. The hub will create a network by developing strong links with reputed institutions and organizations in the region as well as with leading international institutes and organizations. These would include:
  • Scientific institutions

  • State Agricultural Universities (SAUs)

  • Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)

  • Existing State agriculture extension services/systems

  • Farmers' organizations

A hub would also have a laboratory for general research, a sort of place for tinkering.

Functions of the collaborating institutions

The role and activities of the collaborating institutions will include:
  1. Conducting training programs for farmers in science laboratories

  2. Conducting training programs for scientists in farms

  3. DBT will also develop short-term training programs in partnership with international organizations / universities where farmers will get exposure to global farm management and practices.

Eligibility criteria

The following can apply:
  1. A recognized leader working in a public or private institution / university, foundation or society who has a good track record of leading the projects in the area related to transfer and demonstration or dissemination of technologies at farmers' level. The individual should also be knowledgeable about problems of farmers at the grass root level in partnership with 5-8 research institutions or universities.

  2. An institution which has considerable requisite infrastructure and is committed to undertake the programs which are farmer- oriented.

  3. The host institution must have:
    • A functional laboratory

    • A certificate of performance either by farmers / DSIR recognition / ICAR / Department of Agriculture and Cooperation / voluntary NGO status or recognition for service to farmers etc.

    • Successful financial and technical implementation of at least 2 projects funded by any government agencies related to dissemination of proposed technologies and training of large number of farmers, skill development etc.

    • Demonstrated linkages

    How to apply

    1. Fill up the application proforma which is available at:

    3. Two hardcopies of the completed proforma, (printed on both sides and should not be hard bound) along-with a soft copy (in MS Word format) should be sent to any of the following:
