Indian Navy SSC Officers online applications for Executive branch Sports entry June 2017

Looking for career opportunities for engineers in the Indian Navy? Want to join the Indian Navy as a Short Service Commissioned Officer through sports entry? This article provides information on how to apply to become a Short Service Commissioned Officer in the Indian Navy for the executive branch through sports entry. The next batch will begin in June 2017.

The Indian Navy invites qualified engineers to join as Short Service Commissioned Officers for Executive branch (Sports) entry. The course is open to unmarried male candidates who are Indian citizens. Starting in June 2017, the course will be conducted at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) Ezhimala, Kerala.

Eligibility requirements


  1. You should be between 21 and 25 years of age, that is, born between 2nd July 1992 and 1st July 1996, both dates inclusive, for yachting and wind surfing entry.

  2. You should be between 22 and 27 years of age, that is, born between 2nd July 1990 and 1st July 1995, both dates inclusive, for all other sports other than mentioned in #1 above.

Educational qualifications

You must have a qualified regular Post Graduate Degree or B.E./B.Tech. in any field from a recognized university. If you hyve Diploma in Sports Coaching from the National Institute of Sports OR M.Sc. in Sports (Coaching), you will get priority during the short-listing of candidates for the Service Selection Board (SSB).

Sports Qualification

You must fulfil the specific sports qualifications' criteria as per the sports discipline mentioned below:
  1. For Yachting/Wind Surfing sports: You should have at least one of the following qualification:
    • You should have participated in a Senior National Championship conducted by YAI and secured a minimum of 5th position in Olympic classes.

    • You should have represented India at the Asian Games or ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships and secured a medal in Youth/Olympic classes.

    • You should have attained a position amongst the top 50% of the fleet in a class of boat/windsurf completed at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship.

  2. For all other sports: You should have participated in senior level national championships/games in any of the following disciplines: Athletics, Cross Country, Triathlon, Tennis, Squash, Handball, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket, Swimming, Diving, Water polo, Boxing, Kabaddi.

Physical standards

  1. Height and weight: 157cms with correlated weight.

  2. Eye sight: The minimum acceptable vision standards for distant vision 6/126/6, 6/6 with glasses. You must not be colour blind or night blind.

Note: Permanent body tattoos on any part of the body is permitted if you are belonging to a tribal community or are from a tribal area as declared by the Govt. of India. Otherwise, body tattoos are only permitted on your inner face or forearms.

Short Service Commission

Short Service Commission will be granted for a term of 10 years, extendable to 14 years in steps of 2 years each, that is, 10+2+2, subject to service requirement / performance and willingness of candidate. Note that beyond 14 years of Service or Permanent Commission extension will not be granted. On completion of these tenures, Officers will be entitled for gratuity under the extant rules.

Selection procedure

  1. If you are found suitable, you will be required to undergo sailing selection Trials at one of the Naval stations. If shortlisted, you will then be called for a preliminary interview at New Delhi. Once you qualify for the trials and the interview, you will be detailed for SSB at Bhopal, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Visakhapatnam, followed by a medical exam.

  2. First stage of SSB (one day): Intelligence test, picture perception test, discussion test. If you fail in the first stage, you will not proceed to the second stage.

    Second stage of SSB (covering 4 days): Psychological testing, group testing, interview.

    Medical exam: This will cover approx. 3 to 5 days.

  3. If recommended by SSB and declared to be medically fit, you will then be appointed for training as per All India Merit, depending on the number of vacancies.


The training program is scheduled to begin in June 2017 at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala. You will be inducted as an Officer in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant and after the initial Naval Orientation Course will undergo professional training at various Naval training establishments/units/ships. Full pay and allowances will be given as per policies.

Work profile

As a Sports Officer, your duty will be to look after various facets of sports management and perform any other duty based on service requirement.

  3. Click on the 'Submit Application' button once you are satisfied that all the information which you submitted is correct.

  4. Take 2 print outs of the application form with the system generated application number on them.

  5. Paste a recent size color photo at the space provided and self-attest the photo.

  6. One copy of the application form, duly signed, should be sent by ordinary postal mail only (do not send by speed post/registered post/courier) to:

    The application must be sent along with the following documents: Self-attested photo copies of 10th and 12th class certificates along with mark sheets, other educational certificates and mark sheets of all semesters/years along with certificates of participation in sports.
