Expansion plans of Utkal University, Odisha before its 75th anniversary

Utkal University is the oldest University in Odisha. Soon the University would be completing 75 glorifying years of imparting education in the state. The University stands to carry out plans and measures to keep itself uptrend for the future generations. The article puts down some of such plans.

The Utkal University or the Vani Vihar as it is known since ages would be completing 75 glorifying years in 2018. Situated at Vani Vihar Square (named after the University) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, it is the oldest University in the State. The University desires to mark the occasion in a memorable way. Plans for bigger celebrations are on way. Instead of a one month or a one year celebration, the platinum jubilee celebrations would be a two-year long occasion. True, the grandeur of the University is such that this wide period is quite necessary to make its importance known to its many stakeholders.

Catering to the educational needs of more than 1.5 crore people in nine districts in the state, the University has imposed upon itself the task of expanding and digitizing its campus. This is being done with the purpose of meeting the ever increasing demand for learning and education in the State. The University is set to be future ready, at the juncture of completion of 75 years for the next many generations.

The University

The Utkal University is the oldest University in the State and notably the 17th oldest in the country. Established in the year 1943, the University visualized itself as the centre of excellence in higher education with focus on innovative teaching, learning, research and consultancy. The University has produced many eminent personalities in the field of politics, literature and other such fields.

At present the University has 27 full-fledged regular Post Graduate Departments and 17 self-financing programmes. Moreover, there are 371 colleges covering various subjects which are affiliated to it.

Integrated MBA, Integrated MCA and PG Diploma course on Remote Sensing and GIS are the other unique programmes besides the M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes being undertaken here.

In the run for the 75th Anniversary

The University would be carrying out Department-wise seminars and conferences throughout this two-year period. Many such events would also be conducted in and away from the campus whereby the magnitude of the University's giving could be established.

Few other measures for implementation are under consideration for the expansion and up gradation of the University's spread in terms of area as well as courses:
  • Emphasis on the skill development of its students: The employability skills of the students would be honed for better placements. Moreover it also motivates the students to adapt to the office environment.
  • Setting up of the new campus at Chandikhol: The Government has already allotted 70 acres of land at Chandikhol which is about 67 kms from Bhubaneswar. This would be developed as a skill development centre and also act as the University's outreach to the rural sector.
  • Skill Development certificate courses: The varsity is planning to start the certificate courses on skill development in microbiology, tissue culture, export and import for the students in other disciplines.
  • 'Teach for Odisha' Campaign: This campaign is planned to be launched soon in association with the Odisha Skill Development authority (OSDA) whereby special fellowship would be offered to the scholars who would be mentoring the ITI students. They would also assist the teachers in the ITI towards the development of soft skills.
  • Coaching for Civil Services: The University also plans to foray into the coaching of its Post Graduate students for the Civil Services from the coming session. This would be carried out in association with certain volunteering organization.

There are other plans in the blueprints that the University is yet to finalize and announce for the expansion drive undertaken before it lands at the 75th year of foundation.

The recent rating of A+ being certified by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council further motivated the management and the students at the University. The council is an autonomous rating and accreditation body of the UGC.

Let us wish the University achieve its self imposed targets of being able to educate and develop more intellects for the country.
