Generally people address this institute with its abbreviated name "TISS". It was started in year 1936 with the name- Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work and in 1964 it changed as 'Tata Institute of Social Sciences'.

It is a deemed institute with a vision of transferring higher education in the field of Social Sciences, supporting people to have better lives in all respects and to create society with social justice, equality and dignity for all.

Different Centers of TISS

TISS has 4 different centers in India which are located in Mumbai, Tijapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati. All these centers have many schools and independent centers focusing on different aspects of social life like School of Education, School of Habitat Studies, School of Human Ecology, School of Disaster Studies, School of Livelihoods and Development, School of Media and Cultural Studies and many more. What is Integrated M.Phil-PhD. course

The Integrated M. Phil – PhD course is a full time course with 5 years duration and follows the normal common syllabus. The initial course includes studies related to M.Phil which later on extend to the research project for PhD. Candidates will also need to pursue their M.Phil Dissertation during the course.

The candidates can pursue their course at any of the TISS Centers offering their research area and they can either stay in the Campus accommodation (if available) or even outside.

Candidates staying outside the campus need to be in regular touch with their guides, they should attend modular courses and follow all other guidelines of institute like paying fee on time, etc.


Post Graduate candidates who have qualified UGC JRF examination are eligible for this course. Post graduate candidates from the field of Social Sciences and allied fields with academic, industrial or field based experience in Social Work, Disaster Studies, allied fields are also eligible to apply for the same.

The another criteria for eligibility is Research Proposal and candidates seeking to get admission need to submit a research proposal clearly indication research problem, its scopes, objectives of the study, etc.

  2. Announcement of shortlisted Candidates for RAT- 30th January, 2017 by 9.00 p.m.

  3. Research Aptitude Test (RAT)- 10th February, 2017

  4. Announcement of candidates invited for Personal Interview (PI) - 28th February, 2017

  5. Personal Interview at all the 4 campuses- 22nd- 31st March, 2017

  6. Announcement of selected candidates (all campuses) - End of April 2017

How to Apply

Interested candidates can apply online . While filling the online application form, the details can be saved at any stage and a candidate can return to the application by logging in with the user name and password. After completion of application, candidates will need to select the mode of payment which can be credit card, debit card or net banking.

In case of any technical issue, candidate are free to write to or may call at 022-25525252.

The online application will need following documents to be uploaded-
  • Scanned copy of recent passport size photo and signature

  • Scanned copy of challan if the fee is paid in cash.

  • The candidate belonging to SC category need to upload Caste certificate.

  • The candidate belonging to ST category need to upload Tribe certificate.

  • The candidate belonging to OBC category need to upload valid Other Backward Class (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate issued by District Magistrate/ Deputy Commissioner/ Tahsildar.

  • Candidates from PWD, KM and Armed Force category also need to upload their respective supporting certificates.

The candidates can select 2 research areas for application and need to attend the personal interviews for both the areas if invited. The single online application submitted is valid for both the research areas and the application fee is non refundable.

Selection procedure

TISS conducts an entrance examination known as RAT (Research Aptitude Test) and the final selection of candidate will be depending upon his/her performance in the same. A candidate who has qualified RAT but does not match the eligibility criteria will not be allowed to join the course.

RAT is conducted at all the 4 campuses and candidates can select any of them as per their suitability. Candidates can download the model paper from TISS website. The visibly impaired candidates need to mention about the same in their application so that the writer will be arranged for them.

After the written Exam, the selected candidates need to attend the personal interview.
