Being a Keralite, I am always proud of the natural bounty Kerala State has. However I am also sad that either it is not properly used or in some cases it is over exploited.

The planners of tourism schemes and marketing have some stereotype 'one size-fits-all' concept. I was smiling to myself when there were comments that tourism will suffer if bars are closed. This is from the feeling that all tourists visit Kerala to drink liquor. Similarly there is over focus on house boats and fish food.
It should be known that people from different countries visit Kerala. For some hills may be the attraction, for others it may be the backwaters. For some others it may be Kathakali and Ayurveda.

Cleanliness and affordable accommodation should be the main focus. For God's sake let 'Hartals' not become 'HURT'alls especially in the case of tourists.

There should be more importance to domestic tourists also.

If these are followed, then 2017 may attracts more tourists to Kerala state

Kerala tourism always used to boast about the Houseboats at Alleppey and used to make them as selling points.
In fact domestic tourists are also attracted by te house boats and other eco-tourism opportunities in Kerala. The travel-cum-stay in a houseboat with the tasty recipe by cooking the freshly catch fish from the backwaters while travelling in the house-boat is still a very unique experience for the tourists who relish fish food.

However the other day I read a newspiece that Andhra Pradesh is trying to develop its tourism taking help of house-boat operators from Kerala and givingthem incentives to start a house-boat tourism facility in Konaseema the Godavari.

So Kerala cannot rely on the same existing venues and USP all the time and have to dynamically review and re align or re-invent more tourism focus points.

Another important attraction for tourists in Kerala is missing in the above discussions, namely festivals. The most attractive for foreigners is Thrissur Pooram. In this Pooram (festival) there will be 30 elephants caparisoned with golden coloured headwear. These elephants will be divided into two groups of 15 each and one group will face the other group with elephants in the groups standing in rows. There will be 'chenda melam' (drum beating rhythmically) to add attraction. This is a unique sight seen nowhere else, which attracts everybody. Foreigners mainly visit this place, Thrissur, just because of this Pooram. The fireworks connected with this Pooram is also attracting thousands. In this case, there is a competition between the two groups. These groups represent two temples named as Paramekkavu and Thiruvampadi. Hence a good amount of competition takes place.

Another Temple festival which attracts many is the Sabarimala season festival. Kodungalloor temple festival is also famous. The Guruvayur temple also attracts people.
