Recruitment of Soldier (Tradesman) in Indian Army

Every unit of Indian Army requires many support staff of various categories. Indian Army recruits many support staff more than once every year. If you are interested to join Indian Army as support staff, read this article for proper guidance.

Indian Army is a very big organization (third largest army of the world). Each unit of the Army consists of around 800 staff (sometime 1000). So, there is a requirement of various support staff for various purposes in every unit. So, there are requirements of large number of candidates with specialised skills. In this article we are going to discuss the eligibility of appointment and recruitment process for Soldier (Tradesman) in all arms of Indian Army.

Details of posts

As already mentioned, each unit of Indian Army requires lots of supporting staff for various purposes. The details of such supporting staff are indicated below:-
  1. Hair Dresser: Each unit has its own barber shops and barbers are required to maintain the upkeep of the soldiers.
  2. Chef: Each unit has its own cook house/unit kitchen. Food has to be provided to the soldiers three times a day. So, each unit requires qualified cooks.
  3. Store-handlers: Each unit holds lot of stores like rations, clothing, equipment, oils and lubricants etc. These stores have to be maintained in a good condition. So, Army requires store handlers to maintain these unit stores
  4. Animal Store-holders: Units with mules and dogs have equipment and rations as per their specific requirements. The stores are required to be maintained in a serviceable condition which requires Animal Store-holders.
  5. Pioneers: Indian Army requires labours to work in clasified construction sites.
  6. Ferrier: The mules require proper care. Their hoofs are required to be maintained. Candidates who are conversant with the work are required.
  7. Postal staff: The Army has its own Post Offices and services for all official correspondence. Army requires candidates to run these Post Offices.
  8. Artisan (wood). The Army requires candidates who have the knowledge and expertise to work as carpenters. Candidates with ITI qualification or traditional knowledge are preferred.
  9. Steward: Each unit has its own Officers' Mess which caters for the food requirements of the Officers. The Army requires staff for this purpose.
  10. Artisan (Tailor): Each unit has 800-1000 troops and heir uniforms are required to be maintained. Candidates with traditional skills and/or with ITI training are required for this purpose.
  11. Artisan (Painter): Lots of equipment have to bemaintained and marked as per specifications. Candidates with painting skills and expertise are required.
  12. Artisan (Metallurgy): Candidates with traditional skill or with qualification from ITI are required to work as blacksmiths.
  13. Artisan (Musician): Army units have their military bands consisting mainly of Drums Trumpets and Pipes. Candidates with training in music are required.
  14. Equipment Repairer: The shoes and equipment of troops have to be maintained in serviceable condition especially in field areas where there is no support. Candidates with traditional skills or training are required for this purpose.
  15. Kennel-man: The army has its own specialist dogs for guard duties/sniffers and trackers. Dedicated candidates are required to work as their handlers and to look after the dogs.
  16. House-keeper: The unit area, lines, toilets, offices, etc. are to be maintained every day. So Army units require candidates with knowledge and skills for the job.
  17. Washerman: The uniforms of troops and officers have to be maintained to a high standard. So candidates with traditional skills and / or training/ experience are required for this purpose.
  18. Mess-keeper: Each unit has an Officers' Mess. Personnel are required to assist the cook in his daily tasks and to clean the utensils and kitchen every day.

Educational qualification

The candidates must pass Xth standard examination. For house-keeper, qualifying VIIIth standard is necessary. Candidates with traditional skill or ITI qualification will be preferred.


The minimum age of the candidates should be 171/2 years. The maximum age for this post is 23 years.

Physical standards

The candidates must be of height of 162 cm. The chest should be 77 cm and minimum weight is 48 kg. However, the candidates from eastern Himalayan region should have height of minimum 160 cm.

Medical standards

The candidates should have robust physique and good mental health. The chest should be well developed with minimum 5 cm expansion. Furthermore, the candidates must have normal hearing in each year with good binocular vision in both eyes. The color vision should be CP II.

Recruitment procedure

For the recruitment of Army Soldier Tradesman, Indian Army conducts an examination, viz., Indian Army Soldier Tradesman examination. This examination is generally held four times in a year and advertised in the Employment News and other leading newspapers.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT):

The candidates must complete 1.6 Km run in 8 minutes.

Documents required

The following documents are required:
  • The educational certificates/ mark sheets issued by recognized boards (both original and photo copy). ITI certificate, if available.
  • Residence Certificate (both original and photo copy)
  • Caste Certificate (both original and photo copy)
  • School Character Certificate (both original and photo copy)
  • Photographs duly attested.
  • In case of son of serving soldiers/ widows/ war-widows and ex-Servicemen, Relationship certificate (both original and photo copy)
  • NCC Certificate (if available)
  • Sports Certificate (if available)
