Golden Chariot - The luxury train in South India

Golden Chariot is a luxury train in South India that is operated jointly by the state Govt of Karnataka (Karnataka state tourism) and Ministry of Railways. Currently the train is operating on 2 different circuits that depart from Bengaluru (Bangalore) on alternate Mondays (every fortnight) and are for a duration of 7 nights and 8 days.

  1. Pride of South: The circuit covers important travel destinations of Mysore Maharaja Palace, Kabini Tiger Reserve, World Heritage Sites of Hampi palace ruins and Badami cave sculptures and the golden beaches of Goa.

  2. The Golden Chariot train offers summer trips starting from April 7, 2017.

  3. Southern Splendor: This circuit covers the threes states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and the destinations include Puducherry (Pondicherry) - the former French colony, Kerala beaches and backwaters and Brihadeeshwara temple - the world heritage site.

About the Golden Chariot Train

It is a 7 nights and 8 days tour. The train departs at 9 p.m on Mondays from Yashwantpur Railway Station. You need to report by 4 p.m at Hotel Taj West End lobby for check-in formalities. Here you are welcomed with tea and a briefing of the tour accompanied with welcome cultural show. From here you are taken in a coach to the railway station where you are welcomed in a royal Maharaja's style with garlands and trumpets.

The interiors and operation resembles the famous Palace on Wheels train. The internal decor makes you feel as if you are in a royal palace. The interiors resemble the carved temple architecture of Hoysala dynasty. The internal decor of each coach is different named after the famous South Indian dynasties i.e. Vijayanagara, Chalukya, Adilshahi etc.

There are 11 inter-connected luxuriously furnished AC coaches (Passenger Saloon). The other facilities include 2 dinning cars, one bar lounge, a special coach called Arogya which is a mini gym and Ayurvedic spa where tourists can have traditional massage. There is also a business centre.

There are 2 restaurant coaches i.e dining cars - one is Nala and the other is Ruchi. The interiors of these dining cars resemble the structures of royal Hampi and Halebid. The menu includes a fine blend of Indian and continental cuisine with a wide choice of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian delights.

The Golden Chariot Train also has a Cigar Bar Lounge which is called Madira. It's interior resemble the royal Mysore palace.

Each passenger saloon has 4 cabins / rooms and are well furnished with double bed, vanity desk and small wardrobe. There is a butler's cabin at one end of each passenger saloon and a small sitting area at the other end. There is an attached washroom for each cabin with all the required accessories, shower area and hot water supply. Each cabin has a TV and 220 V electrical socket for recharging mobiles, laptops etc.

Following is the tariff for Golden Chariot luxury train is for 7 nights train tour in 'Pride of South' circuit:
For Indian nationals:
  • Rs.1,82,000/- single occupancy (1 person).
  • For double occupancy (for 2 persons), it is Rs.3,08,000/-.
  • Rs 3,36,000/- for 3 persons on triple occupancy.
For foreign passport holders:
  • Rs 3,76,040/- for single occupancy (1 persons).
  • Rs 5,61,680/- for 2 persons on double occupancy.
  • Rs 7,14,000/- for 3 persons on triple occupancy.

The cost of the tour is inclusive of overnight stay and travel on board train in exclusive AC sleeping chambers with attached washrooms, 3 meals served daily (with a wide choice of vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine), packaged drinking water, sightseeing of group tours in AC coaches with English speaking guides, use of on board gym on complimentary basis and wi-fi connection restricted to public areas, cultural programs and still camera / entrance fees at monuments and wild life parks.

In 'Pride of South' train tour, tourists / night guests stay off board in jungle lodge at Kabini and an excursion to Kabini Tiger Reserve on the 2nd day.

Train cost do not include payment to professional photographers / videographers at monuments / sight-seeing, room service, alcohol / non-alcoholic beverages, use of spa / business car facility, telephone call, laundry, tips, porter charges and other personal expenses..

Note:Amount charged for children under 12 years is 50% less than the charges for the adults. And these children are provided with bunk bed (sharing parent's cabin). Children under 5 years are on complimentary basis without bed-sharing in parent's cabin.

The duration of the entire journey is for 7 Nights from Bengaluru to Bengaluru. However tourists can opt to book for 6 nights Bengaluru / Goa part journey. Or they can opt for minimum 3 nights part Journey of their choice and can pay accordingly.

Train tour will operate only when there are minimum of 20 passengers. In case the train is not operated if there are less than 20 passengers, then the advance received will be refunded.

General tips

  • Foreign passport holders need to submit a copy of their passport and Indian visa.
  • Indian nationals need to submit a copy of their pan card and a photo identity residence proof like aadhaar card, driving license, passport etc.
