Hiring an employee is more difficult than a Frog eating a Camel
In this post, I will discuss the pain I am going through to find a few smart people to work with me in our Bangalore office. A lot of people are applying for the job positions, but shortlisting the smart ones is really challenging.

Recently, I advertised for recruiting few smart people for our upcoming educational websites for kids (StudyVillage.com). As soon as the Ad was published, I started getting a lot of response. Almost everyone sends resumes without even fully reading the job description or the requirements. Due to the horrible unemployment situation in India, a lot of graduates are applying for any job requirement they see, no matter it suits them or not.I was looking for few people to draw coloring pages and worksheets for StudyVillage. So I wanted to get someone who have very good drawing skills. I mentioned this requirement very clearly in the Ad. Most of them who applied have no drawing skills and they don't even seem to be aware of the skills required. But some others claim they have excellent drawing skills.
My interview process for this recruitment is very straight forward. Typically, when someone claim they have great drawing skills, I will give them a theme and ask them to draw a picture and send me to instantly. Some of them responded pretty quickly, which made it suspicious. A quick search on the same theme in Google showed me those images were taken from other sources.
So, I started giving strange themes to draw images so that they cannot find them anywhere in Google. That worked out and most of the applicants vanished without responding. But here is a guy who was not ready to give up.
The theme I gave him to draw the picture was "A frog eating a camel". Here is what he drew:
I was trying to figure out which is the frog and which is the camel. Then I saw he has written which is what, to make my job easier!
Even though I posted this as a funny incident, the real concern is, how desperate is our young generation to get a job. I have gone through the same situation. When I finished my B.Sc degree, I was desperate for a job and tried all possible ways to get a job. The interviews I attended include:
- Marketing executive jobs (my marketing skills are worse than the "Frog eating a Camel" picture shown above!)
- Medical representative (imagine a shy personality like me knocking on the doors of doctors and talking about the pharmaceutical products)
- Teaching job (well, I am a good teacher, trust me)
And finally, I choose a career path which I never thought about. There are few people who played a key role in making me what I am today, which I will write in another post later.
