TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) was established in 1936 and was renamed as TISS in 1944. It became a deemed university in 1964 under the UGC (University Grants Commission) act. TISS is an institute of excellence in higher studies. The institute offers B.A graduate programmes, M.A post-graduate programmes, M.Phil and Ph.D research programmes in addition to the short term programmes in various fields.

Find below the details of the short term course of Post Graduate (PG) Diploma in Special Education is offered in the School of Human Ecology, TISS Mumbai campus.

About the programme

PGDSE is a full time programme of one year duration. The programme is focused on human development, varied sensory impairment, physical impairment, neuro-development, emotional and behavioral disorders which limits one's ability to apply oneself in educational, personal and occupational areas. The students of the programmes are trained to identify the functional skills and academic skills of an individual. The students should objectively note the individual's strengths and weaknesses and accordingly plan a support / rehabilitation programme in functional and educational areas.

The programme will prepare professionals by adequately teaching and training them so that the professionals enhance the quality of life of the children, value their needs and help their families to cope up with the concerns.

The programme gives an in-depth knowledge about Special Education for physical and neurological disorders. The students will undergo hands-on practical training about the application of skills they learn during the programme.

Intake for the programme

Total of 25 seats out of which 5 seats are offered to the parents of the children with special needs.


Candidate should have a bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 3 years duration or its equivalent under the 10+2+3 pattern or 10+2+4 pattern. The applicants should fulfill the mandatory requirement of 15 years of formal education from a recognized university.

Candidates with work experience in clinical, social and developmental settings will be given preference.

  2. Date of announcement of shortlist - April 26, 2017.
  3. Date of personal interview - May 4/5, 2017.
  4. Date of announcement of selection on TISS website - May 12, 2017.
  5. Last date for payment of fees - June 2, 2017.
  6. Date of orientation and commencement of academic session 2017-2018 - June 29, 2017.
  7. Commencement of academic session - July 3, 2017.

  1. Tuition fee - Rs.33,000/-.

  3. Examination - Rs.2000/-.
  4. Internship / Field Practicum - Rs.10,000/-/
  5. Library - Rs.2000/-.
  6. Library Deposit (Refundable) - Rs.1000/-.
  7. Development Fund - Rs.5000/-.
  8. Infrastructure Use - Rs.3000/-.
  9. Caution (Refundable) - Rs.1000/-.
  10. Total - Rs.57,300/-.

General instructions for applying

  • Apply through online e-application process only.
  • Read the eligibility criteria and other instructions before filling the form.

  • If there is no internet / telecommunication facility in your area / village, you can get a printed copy of the blank application form from the institute on sending a request letter along with the application fees by speed post to:

    Note:Candidates applying online through e-application system should not send their application by post.
  • You can apply for only one programme and not multiple programmes. If a candidate is found to have applied for more than one programme, then all his / her applications will be cancelled
  • An application fee of Rs.500/- + bank charges to be paid at any branch of SBI (State Bank of India). Submit the fee paid challan along with the application form to the above mentioned address.
  • Note:If you make the payment by cash deposit in an SBI branch, the banker will charge Rs. 50/- for processing fee for each deposit. And this cannot be adjusted against the application fee.
  • Payment through other modes like demand draft, pay order or any mode other than the above modes is not acceptable and the application will be rejected. The applicants will not be communicated about the same.
  • Applicants applying online need to select only one mode of payment i.e either 'cash' or through 'payment gateway'.
  • If you select 'cash' mode for payment, then you have to download the challan and make 3 copies of it. Deposit the cash amount as mentioned in the challan in an SBI branch. The bank will return two copies of the challan ( one student's copy and the other TISS's copy) with the banks seal, signature and journal number on it. You have to scan the 'TISS's copy' of the challan, login back to the online application system and upload the same.

List of documents to be submitted / attached

Following is the list of documents you need to attach / submit along with your filled-in application:
  1. Your photograph, signature, TISS's copy of challan (if paid in cash mode)
  2. Caste certificate (in case of SC/ST candidates - Annual income more than Rs.2.5 lakhs).
  3. Certificate issued after 01.04.2015 by Dist Magistrate / Deputy Commissioner / Tahsildar in case of Other Backward Class (Non-creamy layer - Annual income more than Rs.1 lakh).
  4. Income certificate for the financial year 2014-2015 for
    1. SC / ST applicants in case annual income is than Rs.2.5 lakhs
    2. OBC (NC) applicants in case annual income is less than Rs.1 lakh.
  5. PWD certificate for PwD applicants
  6. KM certificate (only if applicable)
  7. Armed Force certificate (if applicable).
Applicants applying online should upload these documents. Applicants who send the hard copies by post should get the documents attested by any school headmaster, Principal of a college or a gazetted officer. Applications received without any of the above mentioned documents will be rejected.
