IIT Bombay admissions to M.Tech., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs 2017-2018

Are you looking for the 2017 admissions notification of IIT-B Post Graduate programs? This article provides complete information about how to apply for admission to IIT Bombai for its various post graduate programs commencing from July 2017.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay)- one of the premier engineering institutes in India invites applications from eligible students for admission to its Post Graduate programs for the academic session 2017-2018. The programs will begin in July 2017 as per the schedule announced, information of which is provided in this article.

About IIT-B

Established in 1958, he Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), located at Powai, Mumbai has got an excellent reputation for being a premier institute providing top-notch educational, research and training programs, including B.Tech., M.Tech. and Doctoral Ph.D. programs.

The IIT-B campus is a residential one, with 16 hostels. Extra-curricular activities abound for culture, sports and social services.

M.Tech.M.Tech. + Ph.D. (dual degree) programs

You can get admission to an M.Tech. program under the following categories:
  1. Teaching Assistantship (TA)/Teaching Assistantship through Project (TAP)/Fellowship Award (FA) for 2-year program

  2. Research Assistantship (RA)/ Research Assistantship through Project (RAP) for 3-year program

  3. Project Staff (PS), for Project staff of IIT Bombay for 3-year program

  4. Institute Staff (IS), for faculty/staff of IIT Bombay

  5. Sponsored candidates (SW)


You must have a first   class  or  60%   (55%  marks  for   SC/ST)  marks  in  B.E./  B.Tech./  B.Sc. (Engineering)/ M.Sc./ M.C.A./ MBBS/  M.Pharm./ B.Pharm.(4 yr. degree)/ BDS   (4 yr. degree)/ Associate Membership Examinations conducted by a recognized professional body  and  is recognized as equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. Degree.

Please check the IIT-B M.Tech. admissions information brochure for eligibility criteria specific to each discipline and specialization, qualifying exam, GATE (or other PG admission exam) and the requirements for admission under different admission categories.

If you are having a valid IIT B.Tech. degree with a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (on 0­10 scale)  and
above, then you will be exempted from  requirement of GATE  qualification.  You will be admitted to the M.Tech. program under TA/RA positions through written test and/or interview.

In addition to  the M.Tech. programs, IIT Bombay offers you the opportunity to pursue a dual degree M.Tech.+ Ph.D. program in certain disciplines.  If you so wish, you can can get enrolled for the dual   Degree (M.Tech.+Ph.D.) program after the first stage of evaluation of the Masters' dissertation, with the concurrence of the proposed Doctoral Supervisor and PG program committee   of the concerned academic unit.

How to apply

Submit your application online only at IIT Bombay M.Tech. program page.

Application fee for admission: Rs. 150/­- for women candidates; Rs. 150/­- for SC/ST/PwD category candidates ; Rs. 300/­- for all other candidates. The can be paid via Debit Card/Credit Card/SBI Net Banking/Online Payment system/Demand Draft on any nationalized bank (preferably SBI/Canara Bank) in favour of  "Registrar, IIT Bombay", payable at Mumbai branch. 

Note: You must write your name, department, Application  number or GATE registration number and Email address on the reverse side of the DD. If you are paying through DD, then you must send the Demand Draft along with the completed copy of the application.  However, if you have paid the application fee through Debit Card/ Credit Card/ SBI Internet Banking/ Online  Payment System, then you do not have to submit the hard copy of the application.

  • Last date for receipt of completed application form: 18th April 2017

Ph.D. programs

You should have one of the following qualifications in the appropriate subject:
  • Master's Degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree, with First class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST).

  • Any one of the following:(i) Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology  with First class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST). 
    (ii)  Master's degree in Science or equivalent degree, with First class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST). 
    (iii) Master's degree in Arts/Commerce or equivalent degree with a minimum of 55% marks
    (50% for SC/ST), only for admission to the Ph.D. programmes offered by the Industrial
    Design Centre and Department of Humanities & Social Sciences.

Further, you must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements: (i) Valid GATE/CEED Score; (ii) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of CSIR/UGC/NBHM/DBT or DST INSPIRE Fellowship: (iii) Those having UGC­NET lectureship are also eligible for TA , in addition to other academic qualifications in the Humanities & Social Sciences Department; (iv) Minimum of 2 years of professional experience after obtaining the qualifying degree.

M.Phil. program

IIT Bombay is offering an M.Phil. program in planning and development.

Eligibility requirements

You must fulfill one of the following criteria:
  1. Master's degree in Arts, Commerce or equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent letter grade (50% marks for SC/ST) from a recognized university or deemed university.

  2. B.Tech./M.Sc. degree or equivalent with adequate background in Social Sciences with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent letter grade (55% marks for SC/ST).

Note: You can get admission to this program if you qualify in M.Phil. Entrance Test (MET)/ GATE/UGC-JRF/ UGC Lectureship. You do need to appear for MET 2017 to be considered for admission. Those appearing for these exams may also apply. Those who are in service are allowed to apply as sponsored candidates. The selection to the program will be based on your scores in the qualifying test and interview.

M.Sc.- Ph.D. (Dual Degree) program in Energy

Eligibility requirements

You must have a Bachelor's degree in Science of minimum three years duration, with any one of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for two years/four semesters and any one of the remaining two subjects for at least one year/two semesters. The intake to the programme is through the Joint Admission entrance test (JAM) followed by an interview to be conducted by Department of Energy Science and Engineering.
