How to become a Homeopathic doctor in India

Many people in India depend on Homeopathic treatment or other forms of alternative medicine. Homeopathic doctors have very good scope all over India. In this article, the author has discussed about study of Homeopathy and career prospects of Homeopathic doctors in the country.

It is unfortunate that even after 70 years of independence, the Governments (both Central and State) have not been able to provide basic healthcare to every citizen of the country. Allopathic doctors are not available at the remote parts of the country. So, people in these remore parts of the country depend upon other systems of medicine. Further, there is question of affordability. Not all people of the country can afford Allopathic physicians and Allopathic medicine. Some people also don't trust the Allopathic system. So, Homeopathic doctors (along with practitioners of other systems of medicine) are in demand in the country. In this article, we are going to discuss how a student can become a Homeopathic doctor in this country.

Education qualification for becoming Homeopathic doctor

To become a Homeopathy doctor, a student has to finish Diploma/Degree course. A student having Biology as a subject in 12th standard can take admission in Bachelor of Homeopathy Medicine & Surgery (BHMS) or Diploma in Homeopathy Medicine & Surgery (DHMS). Course duration of BHMS is 4 years and half and that of DHMS is 2 years. Interested candidates have to appear in the entrance test conducted by the various state and independent bodies to admit candidates in various medical institutions attached with the body according to the rank of the candidates in the entrance examination. These entrance examinations are generally held in the month of May-June and consist of Objective type questions on English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. However, the number of questions and pattern may vary from examinations conducted in different states. The results of these examinations are generally declared by June-July of the year.

After completing this four and half years of (BHMS) Degree course and one years or six months of compulsory training, a student can opt for some job in private or state run hospitals as junior doctor. Alternatively, such students can opt for private practice after obtaining the necessary affiliation with respective medical councils or can also opt for higher specialized studies in the chosen field.

Course content

In India, there are hundreds of recognized Universities which are running Homeopathy course and are also operating hospitals. In the first two years of the course, the students are taught about internal human body parts and medicine. During the course, apart from the theory, stress is given on practical aspects.

Required skills to become Homeopathic doctor

  1. Homeopathic doctors should possess active listening, critical thinking, speaking, judgment and decision making, complex problem solving and learning skills.
  2. The students and the doctors should possess skills like accounting software, information retrieval or search software, label-making software, medical software and spreadsheet software.
  3. They should also have soft skills like well-developed inter-personal, communication and listening skills for case-study and patient management.

Career prospects of Homeopathic doctors

As already stated, there is vast scope for Homeopathic doctors all over India. Moreover, Government of India and State Governments also appoint Homeopathic doctors. In these cases, Homeopathic doctors get equal scale as that of the Allopathic doctors. Such Homeopathic doctors (appointed by Central Government and State Governments) also get Non Practicing Allowance (NPA) at the rate of 20 per cent. So, if a student is interested to become a Homeopathic doctor, he/she must appear in the admission test for admission in BHMS or DHMS.

The success of Homeopathy treatment depends on the following points-
1. Finding the totality of the symptoms of the patient external, internal, mental, physiological, functional etc. Thorough study of the patient is required to find out the peculiarities of the symptoms to find out a suitable medicine to cure the diseases. But most of the Homeopaths nowadays give medicines basing on the symptoms of the disease where they are failing in their treatment.
2. Homeopaths have to follow strictly the basic fundamental principles of Hahnemann and any deviation from it leads to failure of Homeopathic practice and that is what is happening now.
3. A good Homeopath should have an ability to communicate with the patient so that he can get all the clues of the symptoms to cure the disease appropriately. This communication skill is required for Homeopath because some patients cannot communicate their problems properly.

Nice to read the inputs given on how to become a Homeopathic doctor. Generally people have immense faith and trust on alopathic doctors and the people of older generation and senior citizens who are not well versed with English medicines, to keep faith and trust the homeopathic doctor. So the responsibility of a homeo doctor increases much more as the patient came from Alopathic way of medicine to this fold and thus the doctor must be ably trained to recognize the disease and also give the right combination of medicine. In this regard I wish to mention about one Homeopathic doctor by name Ravinder Reddy, who is famous in our area for treating even the chronic diseases. He treated my father-in-law who was suffering from heel thorns or corns and to which he gave the medicines in that completed cured it forever.
