How to become a veterinary doctor in India

Although Veterinary Science has many lucrative prospects, it is still not popular among students in India. Veterinary doctors can work in zoos, pharmaceutical research laboratories, veterinary hospitals, universities and in defence services. They can also work in big poultries and dairies. In this article, the author discusses the course, career prospects and various pros and cons of the profession.

Veterinary Science is still not a very popular choice among Indian students. But Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & AH) and its various specialisations can be a lucrative career option for students who are interested to work in the interesting and expanding field. Veterinary Science is the science of treating and curing various diseases of birds and animals. The basic principles of this specialized branch of study are quite similar to that of human medical sciences. The primary objective of both is the prevention and elimination of maladies and restoration of the biological organism to perfect health.

There is a growing demand for veterinarians in India. Although not very popular, but even then increasing numbers of students are joining this field. People both in rural areas and urban areas are keeping pets, both for livelihood and protection.

Veterinary Science eligibility criteria

For the Bachelors Degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry course, a candidate should have passed the class 12th examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Admission to most veterinary colleges is done on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance examination conducted by the university concerned. It is a five year course which includes compulsory training.

Those students who want to pursue Masters Degree in Veterinary Science or Animal Husbandry must have completed Bachelors Degree in respective branch with good percentages of marks. The selection is made on the basis of entrance examination conducted by the university.

Career prospects in Vetrinary Science

Several career options are nowadays available for Graduates and Post-Graduates in Veterinary Science. With the development in science and technology, more and more career opportunities are opening up for the fresh Graduates and Post-Graduates in this field.

Dairy research institutes, large dairies, piggery and poultry farms require the services of many veterinarians. The areas of specialisation in this sector include production of milk, eggs and meat etc. It is needless to state that the health of all the farm and poultry animals is the responsibility of the veterinarians.

Cities and towns also require the services of veterinarians owing to the practice of keeping pets (dogs, cats and parrots) in the affluent homes. The Government also employs veterinarians as public health professionals whose services are utilised in zoos, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The Defence Services use horses, dogs, camels and other animals So, Defence Services also require a large number of veterinarians. In fact, there is a Veterinary Corps in the Army headed by a Major General. Organisations like zoological research institutes employ veterinarians to conduct research and development in various areas. In addition, experienced veterinarians are recruited in universities and other institutions to train the new students.

The pay package of Government veterinarians is lucrative. As far as the private practitioners are concerned, the income depends upon their professional knowledge, commitment and goodwill.

Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh, College of Verinary Sciences, Hisar, Haryana, Bombay Veterinary Science College, Mumbai and N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Hydrabad are some of the well-known academic institutions teaching Veterinary Science in India.

Positive and negative aspects of the job

The vetrinary doctors enjoy good pay packets, especially in Government sectors and universities. They get the unique opportunity to be part of new research on animals and also to the economic progress of the country by rearing farm and dairy animals. There is a unique type of job challenge and job satisfaction in treating animals who can't verbally convey their problems.

On the other hand, the profession is not very popular in India. There is also possibility of getting diseases from animals. Veterinary doctors also have to deal with dangerous animals difficult pets.
