Career after Post graduation in chemistry

The career chances are very good for M.Sc Chemistry candidates. They have many fields to get a job. Then can opt for teaching job, Research Scientist job, chemist job or other non core jobs also. There are plenty of chances for these candidates both public sector as well as private sector. In this article various options that are available for Post graduates in chemistry are discussed.

Chemistry is one of the important sciences that are very useful in our day to day life. Chemistry is a science which deals with the chemical properties of elements. It is a subject related to the science of materials and reactions.

There are many branches in chemistry. But the main branches are
Organic Chemistry.
Inorganic Chemistry,
Physical Chemistry,
Analytical Chemistry.

Many students who could not get a seat in engineering will opt for B.Sc. with Mathematica, Physics and Chemistry. After completing their graduation they can go for post-graduation in chemistry. There are some universities offering integrated 5 years M.Sc. (Chemistry) course after Intermediate.

Institution of Chemists (India) is located in Calcutta. This institute offers AIC certification by examination. This certificate is equal to M.Sc. in chemistry for all the purposes. A person who has completed B.Sc. with chemistry and has minimum 2 to 3 Years' experience as chemist in any industry is eligible for appearing for this examination.

After completing this course there are many career paths to take. In this article I want to present various options available to a candidate who has successfully completed his M.Sc. Chemistry.

Research Fellowships & Teaching Institutes

Anyone who is having interest for teaching job can appear to NET examination that is being conducted by CSIR after completing their PG course. Once they clear this exam they are eligible for lecturer post with UGC scales in universities and colleges. The candidates who have cleared this exam can also opt for research in any CSIR laboratory or University with CSIR fellowship. They can get their doctorate degree through this. Initially they will be awarded junior research Fellowship, basing on their progress after two years they can get Senior Research Fellowship. If they complete their Ph.D., within the stipulated time they can get Post-Doctoral Research fellowship. The fellowships are quite lucrative and give very good chance for qualification improvement.

There are some fellowships which are given on merit of marks by universities. They can complete their Ph.D. with that fellowship also. Once they complete their Ph.D. they are eligible for lecturer post with UGC Scales. No need to get qualified in CSIR NET exam.

Research Laboratories

There are many laboratories in public sector and many research institutes of Government of India and State Government. All these are absorbing M.Sc. chemistry candidates as Scientists.

The following are a few laboratories,

National Chemical Laboratories, Pune,
Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad,
Defence Research and Development laboratories, all over India,
Regional Research Laboratories, Bhubaneswar,
Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore
Central Tobacco Research Institute, Rajahmundry,
Indian Space Research Laboratories, Bangalore
Vikram Sarabhai space centre, Trivandrum,
Satish Chandra space centre, Sullurpeta
Government Forensic Laboratories, India,
Centre for cellular and molecular biology, Hyderabad,
Geological survey of India,
National Mineral Development Corporation, India.

All these laboratories are doing lot or research works related to chemistry. They take many chemistry postgraduates as scientists. Another advantage for the people working here is they can register for their Ph.D., with university and get Ph.D. while working here.

Ordnance Factories Board, India

All ordnance manufacturing factories in our country will work under the administrative control of this Board. These factories are located all over India. They require many chemistry post graduates to work in various capacities. The designations will be like chemists, senior chemists, chief chemists, chemical officers, R&D officers, QC officers etc.

Public sector undertakings

There are many manufacturing units under public sector owned by Government. They are located all over India. They manufacture fertilisers, chemicals, plastics and many other items. All these factories will require huge number of chemists in various levels in their units. Gas authority of India, HPLC, ONGC, IOCl and BPCL are some of the major Public sector undertakings in India.

Private Sector Units

There are many manufacturing companies in India. They manufacture pharmaceuticals, Drugs, solvents, foods, dyes and so many other items.
All these factories also require many chemistry post graduates for their laboratories and production department.

Abroad opportunities:

After completing M.Sc. people who are interested in going abroad can try for M.S or Doctoral course in many foreign Universities. After completing their Ph.D., there will be many chances to settle there with a good job.

Banks and other administrative Jobs

The post graduates in Chemistry are also eligible for bank officers and other administrative jobs. They can also attend for IAS, Group 1, Group2 and other administrative jobs. Like all other candidates, they can also appear for written test followed by oral test. But they are non-core jobs.

Final Words:

The opportunities for post graduates in Chemistry are very good. The prospects of career will also be very good. So people need not worry that they have not got seat in Engineering. They can join in degree course and then post-graduation Course and definitely they will have a very good future on par with an engineering graduate.

I want to ask the author whether Chemical Engineering is superior or the post graduation in Chemistry is better to get good career prospects. Normally, for this stream very few students are interested and that may be the reason there are good openings in government firms and also abroad. However it all depends on where we study such courses. In Hyderabad Chemical Engineering is considered as the better option if the candidate won't get the chance in other streams.

It is not the question of superior or inferior. Each course is having its own importance. If somebody wants to have a good career, the qualification helps them in starting the career. Afterwards the candidate's ability and attitude will have a lot of say. The problem solving techniques and analytical skills will have better chances. Even Though my view differs, it is general belief that chemical Engineers have better chances.

An excellent and useful article from Dr. Rao. Generally many Science students give less importance to Chemistry vis-a-vis Physics. But as on date, Chemistry provides varied opportunities in terms of employment. I am adding some more fields where Chemistry students find employment opportunities.
(a) Pharmaeutical companies: Many Pharma companies appoint Post-Graduates in Chemistry as Chemists.
(b) FMCG companies: FMCG comanies also appoint Chemistry Post-Graduates as Chemists.
(c) Academics: As Chemistry is taught from school level, Chemistry students have adequate opportunities in teaching profession even at school-level. They are also appointed in Colleges and Universities, not only as Faculty members but also in laboratories.
(d) Industrial Chemistry: This is another field which offers adequate opportunity to Chemistry students.
(e) Organic Chemistry: This field provides ever-increasing opportunities to Chemistry students.
(f) Chemical weapons manufacturing: All over the world, Chemistry students get opportunity in this field.
(g) Bio-chemistry: Another field which provide increasing opportunities to Chemistry students.
(h) Research & Development: Many Chemistry students are gainfully employed in this field where they can gainfully utilise their specialised knowledge.
