How to apply for admissions to Kendriya Vidyalayas

Are you looking for details of the eligibility criteria to get admission to a Kendriya Vidyalaya? This article gives complete information on the age criteria and other eligibility requirements to apply for admission to KVs in India and abroad. You will also get details on how the admission process is done.

A Kendriya Vidyalaya is a school established by the Central Government of India with classes from Class 1 onward. All the Kendriya Vidyalayas follow the CBSE curriculum. These schools aim to provide education to children of government employees and those serving in the Armed Forces. The schools are all monitored by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), which is based in New Delhi.

With regard to reservations, for all new admissions, 15% seats in the KVs are reserved for children of scheduled caste, 7.5% for children of scheduled tribes and 3% for differently abled children.

Who can apply

It should be noted at the outset that since the last nine years, automatic admission to Class 1 is no longer the norm. Parents must seek fresh admission to Class 1.

The age of the child is the primary criteria which determines to which class he/she can be admitted. Minimum and maximum age on 31st March of the year in which admission is sought is as mentioned below:

  1. For Class 1: 5 years to 7 years

  2. For Class 2: 6 years to 8 years

  3. For Class 3: 7 years to 9 years

  4. For Class 4: 8 to 10 years

  5. For Class 5: 9 to 11 years

  6. For Class 6: 10 to 12 years

  7. For Class 7: 11 to 13 years

  8. For Class 8: 12 to 14 years

  9. For Class 9: 13 to 15 years

  10. For Class 10: 14 to 16 years

  11. For Class 11: There is no age restriction for admission to Class XI provided the student is seeking admission in the year of passing Class X examination.

  12. For Class 12: There is no upper & lower age limit for admission to class XII provided there has been no break in the continuous study of the student after passing class XI.

Note: A child born on 1st April will also be considered for admission. The maximum age limit can be relaxed by two years in case of differently-abled children by the Principal.

For those who are not KV students and seek admission to Class 10 and 12, admission can be applied for as per the number of seats which are available at the time, with the provision that the number of students in Class 10 / Class 12 is below 40. The student also should meet these eligibility criteria:
  1. The student should have been in a recognized CBSE-affiliated school.

  2. For Class 10 admission, the student should have scored not less than 6.5 CGPA in Class 9 (CGPA to be calculated as per formula applied by CBSE in class X).

  3. For admission to Class 12, the student must have scored no less than 55% marks in the Class 11 exams.

  4. The student should fulfil other requisite criteria as per the official KVS admission guidelines.

  5. The combination of subject options taken up by the student should be available in Kendriya Vidyalayas.

  6. It is possible that a student in a Kendriya Vidyalaya in India has to go abroad with his/her parent when the parent is deputed to another country. In this case, the student can seek admission to a corresponding class on returning to India to continue studies in a Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Special provision has been made to grant admission to children over & above the class strength (unless stated otherwise by KVS) in certain cases, such as children of MPs, those of KV employees (retired & serving), those of individuals who won gallantry / Bravery awards, those whose parent has won a National Award for teaching, those who are meritorious sports children, etc.

Children of Armed Forces personnel can get automatic admission in a Kendriya Vidyalaya on the basis of a transfer certificate issued by the CBSE affiliated schools run by Armed Forces, Para Military forces, CISF, the Indian Coast Guard and may extend to AEES (Atomic Energy Education Society) also. However, the admission will be given on the basis of the following cases: (i) the parent being transferred to that place or (ii) the parent has decided to settle at the place after retirement or (iii) the parent has been transferred to some place which he considers unsafe for his family & hence decided to keep the family at another location.

The admission process

Each year in February, the regional office of KVS will advertise an admission notification in the local newspapers of that region.

The registration form at a KV is available free of cost. The registration form complete in all respects and accompanied by all required documents must be submitted/sent to the Kendriya Vidyalaya concerned within the prescribed date as per notification of KVS. It is necessary to submit self-attested copies of the prescribed documents along with the application form for registration.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya then has a draw of lots for admission to Class 1. For other classes from Class 2 to 8, it will be on the basis of available number of seats. A Committee is formed to monitor the draw.

For admission to Class 9 there is an admission test and a merit list is prepared for each category of priority separately. This test is of 3 hours, with 100 marks, 20 marks each for Hindi, English, Maths, Social Science and Science. The student must score minimum 33% marks in aggregate to qualify. Students belonging to SC/ST/ PH category will be eligible for admission on securing 25% in aggregate.

For admission to Class 11, admission to the various streams is based on CGPA scored in the Class 10 exam examination. For Science stream a minimum of 7.6 CGPA; for Commerce stream a minimum of 6.4 CGPA and for Humanities stream all students if declared successful. In case of fewer numbers being enrolled, the eligibility criteria can be lowered to 6.4 CGPA for Science and 6.0 CGPA for Commerce.

Concessions will be allowed for admission for Class 11, such as for sports, NCC, adventure activities, etc. Parents can check the admission notification released by KVC when admission are opened for an academic session.
