How to become a coffee taster through PG Diploma in Coffee Quality Management

Coffee Board Govt. of India, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has issued the admission notification for its Post Graduate Diploma in Coffee Quality Management (PGDCQM) program for the academic session 2017-18 which will begin in September this year. Applications are also welcome from those sponsored by coffee industry.

About the course


The Post Graduate Diploma in Coffee Quality Management (PGDCQM) program aims to educate and train people with relevant skills for evaluation of coffee quality and become experts in coffee tasting.

From understanding the way coffee is cultivated and processed, to gaining expertise in marketing strategies, to learning about coffee brewing technology and quality assurance systems, those pursuing this course will be learning all there is to know about coffee! You will also get training sessions in soft skills and help with developing your overall personality during the second trimester.

Duration of the course

You will pursue the PGDCQM course for 12 months, spread over three trimesters. All teaching and training sessions are conducted in English.

Course Fee

The total fee of the PGDCQM course is Rs. 2,50,000/-.

What you will learn

The first trimester of the PGDCQM course will be conducted at Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI) in Chikmagalur District, Karnataka and will include the following modules:
  1. Coffee varieties and Cup profile

  2. Coffee Agronomy – Coffee Growing

  3. Coffee Chemistry

  4. Coffee Pest and Disease

  5. Coffee Processing and Quality

The second trimester of the course will be at Bangalore, during which you will learn:
  1. Principles of Coffee Quality

  2. Coffee Chemistry and Roasting Technology

  3. Quality Assurance System

  4. Soft Skills and Personality Development

  5. Computer Applications for Quality Management

The third and final trimester will have more advanced learning and training modules via practicals, culminating with a Dissertation. The curriculum of the final year includes:
  1. Coffee Marketing and trade

  2. Espresso and Value Added Coffees

  3. Intensive Cupping (Practical)

  4. Coffee Chemistry and Brewing Technology

  5. Quality management system and Distribution Management

  6. Dissertation

Hostel accommodation

You can avail of free accommodation for the first trimester at CCRI at Balehonnur, Chikmagalur. However, you need to make your own arrangements in Bangalore for the second and third trimesters.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria: You should be not more than 30 years of age. This is relaxed by 5 years for sponsored candidates.

  2. Academic qualification: You should have a qualified Bachelor's degree with at least one of these subjects:
    • Botany

    • Zoology

    • Chemistry

    • Biotechnology

    • Bioscience

    • Food Technology

    • Food Science

    • Environmental science

    • Agricultural sciences

  1. Preference will be given to those candidates who are sponsored by export firms or curing establishments or coffee plantations.

  2. If you are a foreign student seeking admission under open / sponsored category, then you must be well versed in English. Your admission to the program is subject to the clearance of the Government of India.

  1. Download the PGDCQM course application form from the official website
    Obtain the application form in person from Coffee Board, Bangalore (address has been provided below)

  2. Send the completed application form by postal mail / Speed Post with a Demand Draft for Rs.500/- payable to "Coffee Board IEBR Account" along with a self-addressed envelope (size of the envelope should be 9" x 6") to:

Selection process

Eligible candidates will face a selection committee which will evaluate each candidate's academic records, conduct a personal interview of the candidate and give a sensory evaluation test to the candidate.
