Inland Waterways Authority of India internship program for students 2017

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is inviting applications from UG and PG students and research scholars to take up work as interns. Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), which is under the aegis of the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, is offering an opportunity to undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars to undertake an internship at its Headquarters in Noida, U.P. as well as at regional project offices across the country. Note that this program is not to be considered as a recruitment for a job with IWAI or a guarantee of a future job with IWAI.

About the program

The program is open to college and university students in various fields, including but not limited to, engineering, business administration, transportation, finance, HR etc. Maximum 10 undergraduate students and maximum 15 postgraduates/research scholars will be selected for the year. The work will include writing reports, giving inputs, analysing projects and proposal preparation work. Through the internship program you will learn the various facets of the inland waterway transportation sector and their application to related issues in the sector.

The specific area of work will be assigned to you based on your application and a selection process. Accordingly, you could be assigned on work related to hydrography, marine engineering, traffic and cargo handling, terminal operations, Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, administrative or HR-related responsibilities, etc.

Location of internship

As per requirement of IWAI's relevant departments, you will be assigned to work either at the Head office at Noida or at a project office of a Director or Deputy Director level Officer in the concerned Division. The Region-wise requirement / proposed deployment of undergraduate and post graduate / research scholar interns is:
  1. Guwahati Regional Office: 2 PG / 1 UG

  2. Dhubri sub-office: 1 PG / 1 UG

  3. Patna Regional Office: 2 PG / 1 UG

  4. Varanasi sub-office: 2 PG / 1 UG

  5. Kolkata Regional Office: 2 PG / 2 UG

  6. Kochi Regional Office: 2 PG / 2 UG

  7. Noida Head Office: 3 PG / 2 UG

Important notes:
  1. Before you begin the internship, you must furnish a declaration of confidentiality.

  2. You will need to have your own laptop for the internship program and make your own provision for accommodation. IWAI will provide the requisite working space. An attendance record and record of work supervision will be maintained by the Head of Verticals/Units/Divisions.

Internship Stipend

Undergraduate interns will receive a remuneration of Rs. 10,000/- while Post Graduate interns and those who are research scholars will receive a remuneration of Rs.20,000/- per month, payable on satisfactory completion of the internship. The remuneration of the last month will be given only on submitting your Report/paper.

You will be reimbursed for travelling costs incurred when you are required to travel for the work assigned.

Eligibility requirements

You should be pursuing or have completed a Graduate/ Post Graduate Course from a nationally reputed university / institution.

With regard to academic records, as a Graduate applicant you should have obtained at least 80% marks in the 12th exam. If you are a Post Graduate applicant, then you should have obtained at least 60% in the graduation degree. If you are a research Scholar, you should have obtained at least 60% in Post-Graduation.

Internship duration

Duration of internship will be for a minimum period of 6 months and maximum period of 12 months at different points of time during the year. IWAI may extend the internship after 12 months for further 6 months (maximum) with approval of Chairperson on the recommendation of concerned Director.

Your internship may be terminated by IWAI with a one month notice in case your the performance is not satisfactory. Of your own wish, too, you are allowed to discontinue the internship by giving notice one month earlier to leaving the program.

Once you have satisfactorily completed your internship, along with submission of your report / paper and its evaluation by the Director /Director In charge level officers or your Division, you will receive an 'Experience Certificate' which will be issued by IWAI. If you do not complete the requisite period, then you will not be issued any such certificate.

Submission of Report

At the end of your internship program, you present to the concerned Head of Division a report/Paper on the allotted subject. At the same time, you will need to give the Head of Department mandatory feedback on your experience of the program, monitoring and supervision by the officer concerned.

Note that in your application you should clearly indicate the name of Division and areas of your interest, in order of preference, on which you would like to work upon during your internship.

Once you are selected, you will need to submit a letter from your Head of Department/ Principal, indicating your status in the institution and a "No Objection" for being allowed to join the internship program for the period for which you have been selected.
