Making decision between "career in cricket" or "studies and job"

Cricket is considered "God" in india and is one of the most liked games. It is also considered one of the richest and most popular sports in India. So it goes without saying that many youngsters are aspiring to make a career in cricket. With passion to be a cricketer in their mind, often these youngsters are in dilemma whether to give more importance to studies or to cricket? Aim of this article is to give some insight into making this important decision.

Career in sports can be full of struggle

Youngsters who consider cricket as their passion tend to give less importance to their studies. I think there is no harm in following one's passion. As per me a youth can go ahead and follow his passion provided they have confidence, courage and determination to carry it till the end. In present time selection in Indian cricket has also become very competitive and there are so many talented young players still waiting for their chance in Indian cricket team. So undoubtedly a person will need to struggle and work very hard to find his place. Sometimes even if they work hard it may happen that due to other factors like politics within the selection committee they may not be selected. So they need to be very tough from within and do not get demoralized and stop your hard work under such circumstances.

Studies and job has to go along with cricket

On the other hand, I will also suggest not to leave study for cricket as it will be very risky thing to do so. After completing their 10th or 12th class they can go for any specialized short term job oriented course which matches their interest. They should try for part time course so that it leaves time for cricket practice. This will create backup for future and they can find a job in case something does not turn out right in their cricketing career and they are not able to earn much through the game. At the same time they have to make sure that they practice cricket regularly and if required join some good coaching academy which can give them good exposure in playing different level cricket tournaments.

Please note that by talking about struggle, failure and competition in field of cricket I do not want to scare people but it is just to make them aware so that they can prepare their mindset based on it right from the beginning.

Family's viewpoint

Under such situations when a sport is selected as career option, parents and family members are usually very concerned. They are often apprehensive about their success, if they adopt cricket as their career and advice their children to carry on study and go for regular jobs. Reason behind it is that they feel that their children are not going to get anything out of it and it will be difficult for them to sustain themselves financially if they are not successful. So they prefer getting a degree and doing and job a safe option. But things have really changed a lot recently specially for cricket and successful cricketers are earning cores today. In current difficult economic situation with so many people getting fired from jobs nowadays even there is uncertainty regarding getting job after studying and getting degree. Even after getting job, job security is not there, if it is not a government job. So they need to sit and explain their family members regarding all this and make them realize that uncertainty is present everywhere nowadays so why not follow their dream.

Reasons to be positive about cricketing career

Here I would like to reflect some brighter side of career in cricket. Compared to earlier when we had only ODI and Test cricket nowadays there are so many different formats of game like T20, IPL etc where young players are getting such a good opportunity to showcase their talent. In fact there are so many players in Indian cricket team who have found their place based on their performance in IPL matches. Now I think there is even talk of starting T10 format. So all this is likely to give more opportunity for budding cricketers to show their talent in format that suits their temperament the most. Also nowadays even young players from B tier towns and average family background are also finding equal opportunity to play for Indian cricket so this also gives a reason to feel optimistic about the future.

To end I would like to say that even though nowadays active life of a cricketer is only 6-7 years due to competition but still if a cricketer is successful he would have made so much money that he need not look back for rest of his life. Along with that name and fame earned will be something really worth it. Even if cricketers are moderately successful still they will earn handsome money so that they need not worry for the future. After cricketing career is over there are number of options still for the cricketers to continue in same field. If they have good communication skills they can easily become cricket commentators or match analysts. They cal also opt to become a cricket coach if they want to spread their skills to others.
But presently there is an unpleasant trend of match fixing also prevailing in cricket so a cricketer should always be determined not to get trapped in it and spoil their hard work.
