The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, better known by its Acronym, GATE, is a National Level Entrance Test conducted each year, for admission into IITs, IISc, IISERs and other established engineering institutes in India to their M.E, M.Tech and PhD programmes. The examination is conducted by the IITs and IISc alternately.

Candidates who qualify the GATE are eligible for admission into Masters and Doctoral (Postgraduate programmes) with Ministry of Human Research and Development (MHRD) and other Government Assistantships/Scholarships in the following fields –

  • Technology
  • Engineering
  • Science
  • Architecture

A few PSUs consider the GATE score for recruitment. The GATE scores are valid for a period of 3-years after the results are declared.

The registration for GATE 2018 will commence on September 01, 2017. Candidates will be able to register their names on the GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System), on the said date, when the website goes live. The online examination is scheduled to be held in February 2018. This year's GATE is being conducted by the Indian Institute of Guwahati.

Dates to remember for GATE 2018

Mark the following dates on your calendar, so you do not miss the deadlines -

  • Registration of Online Application Form commences on – September 01, 2017
  • Last date to submit online application – September 05, 2017
  • Last date to alter the examination city previously selected – November 17, 2017
  • Download GATE 2018 Admit Card – January 05, 2018
  • Examination date for GATE 2018 – 03 & 04 February 2018 and 10 & 11 February, 2018
  • Announcement of results – March 17, 2018
  • Download score cards from Application Website from the last week until the end of May 2018
  • Counselling sessions commence in April 2018

How to register for GATE 2018

Candidates desirous for appearing in GATE 2018 can check the eligibility criteria (the same is mentioned below) and apply for the test, by submitting an online application, which will be available on the GOAPS website on September 01. Scanned copies of signature and photograph have to be uploaded, during registration. The applicant will also need to pay the requisite fees, either online or through Challan. Applicants get around a month, in which, to complete the entire registration process.

Registration process for GATE 2018

  • Check the GATE website for the application form, dates and updates
  • Fill in the details asked for in the registration form, such as name, DOB, Contact details – mobile number and email ID
  • Upload scanned copies of photograph, documents and signature
  • Remit the Application Fee – check the fee you need to pay, based on your category
  • The registration process is completed

Application Fee based on categories

Check the fees you need to pay, based on your category –

  • Women candidates – INR 750
  • SC/ST/PwD candidates – INR 750
  • The rest of the candidates – INR INR 1500

Fees for candidates opting for Overseas Centres

For the convenience of overseas students the GATE 2018 will also be conducted in select centres abroad. The application fees for these centres are –

  • Colombo, Kathmandu, Addis Ababa and Dhaka – US $ 50
  • Singapore & Dubai – US $ 100

Payments can be remitted either online using credit/debit cards or net banking or via e-Challan. Applicants will have to bear additional charges levied by their respective banks for exchange and transfer of funds and service tax. These charges will be intimated on the payment portal, at the time of fund transfer.

Eligibility criteria for GATE 2018

There is no age bar for candidates desirous of appearing for GATE 2018. However, candidates must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible to apply –

Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech)/Bachelor of Engineering B.E) /Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm

  • Candidates who have completed the above mentioned degrees courses or are in the final year of the course, are eligible to apply
  • However, the year of qualification, as stipulated on the website, should not ne later than 2018
  • Engineering & technology graduates must have qualified a 4 year programme, after their SSC
  • Candidates with a Diploma in Engineering or Technology, or a B.SC degree, must have qualified a 3 year programme after their SSC

Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch)

  • Candidates who are pursuing studies in the final year or those who have completed the programme can register for GATE 2018
  • Candidates should qualify the exam in 2018, to meet the eligibility criteria
  • Eligible candidates must have (be) studied/studying in a 5 year B.Arch programme

Bachelor of Science (Research)/BS

  • Candidates presently in the 4th year or those who have obtained a B.Sc degree or Post-Diploma can apply
  • The qualifying year for these degrees remain at 2018

MCA/M.Sc/M.A or equivalent

  • A Master's degree in any branch of Mathematics, Science, Computer Applications and Statistics or their equivalent can apply
  • The candidates should have finished their Master's programme or be in the final year, in which case they must qualify in 2018, to be considered

Integrated M.Tech/M.E (Post B.Sc)

  • Candidates who've completed or pursuing a 4-year integrated Master's degree programme can apply
  • The eligibility is also extended to students who are in the IInd, IIIrd, and IVth year of the programme with the qualifying date being 2020

Integrated M.Tech/M.E or Dual degree (after 10+2 or Diploma)

  • Students enrolled in a five-year, Integrated Post-graduate degree progamme or a Dual Degree programme in Technology or Engineering can register for GATE 2018
  • The registration is open for students who are currently in the 4th or final year of the programme and those who have already completed the course
  • Those still studying must obtain a degree by 2019

Integrated M.Sc/Integrated B.S – MS

  • Candidates with an Integrated M.Sc degree or a 5-year Integrated B.S – M.Sc programme qualification are deemed qualified to apply
  • Candidates who are pursuing the programme and are in the final year, can also apply, provided the course ends in 2018

Professional Society Exam (equivalent of B.Tech/B.E/B.Arch)

  • Candidates who have qualified B.Tech/B.E/B.Arch equivalent exam of Professional Societies, recognised by the UPSC/MHRD/AICTE can also apply
  • Example : AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers, India or the AMIE by Institution of Engineers – India
  • Candidates should have qualified Section A or its equivalent, of the said professional programmes

The Pattern for GATE 2018

  • The GATE 2018 will be a Computer Based Test, conducted online
  • The examination will consist of MCQs & Numerical questions
  • There will be no negative marking for responses in the Numerical section

Examination Centres

The examination will be conducted in a selected cities and towns across India, and at the following cities, overseas Dhaka in Bangladesh, Singapore, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, Kathmandu in Nepal, Colombo in Sri Lanka and Dubai in the UAE.

Candidates will be able to select a place of their choice, at the time of registration.
