UPSC Civil Service Examination – 2018 schedule

The UPSC Civil Service Examination schedule has been announced. The preliminary exams will be held on 03 June 2018. Check the other dates and schedule for the exam. Also, find the dates for the main exams to be held in 2017.

Are you aspiring to join the Civil Services? Are you preparing for the UPSC Civil Service Exam 2018?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the schedule for the 2018 Civil Service Exam. The date for the prelims has however been announced and is set to be conducted on 03 June 2018.

If you are an aspirant for the exam to be held next year then you can make use of the calendar that has been published. The UPSC will release the notification for the same on 07 February 2018 and will stop accepting the applications for the 2018 Civil Services Exam from 06 March 2018 onwards.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services examination every year. The exam is conducted in three stages, namely –

  • Preliminary
  • Main
  • Interview

Aspiring candidates have to qualify all three stages of the examination process to be deemed successful. Additionally, the UPSC makes an annual announcement of vacancy particulars in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), and so on and invites qualified candidates for selection.

UPSC Civil Service Exam Calendar for 2018

Note down the important dates -
  • 07 February, 2018 – UPSC will release the notification for the Civil Service Exams 2018 and begin accepting applications
  • 06 March, 2018 – Is the last date to submit the application
  • 03 June, 2018 – Preliminary exams will commence
  • 01 October, 2018 – The mains for the Civil Service exams will commence. The same will last for five days

The examination schedule for this year's exam is as follows -

28 October, 2017

  • Paper-I, Essay (commences at 09:00 hrs and ends at 12:00 hrs)

30 October, 2017

  • Paper-II, General Studies (commences at 09:00 hrs and ends at 12:00 hrs)
  • Paper-III, General Studies (commences at 14:00 hrs and ends at 17:00 hrs)

31 October, 2017

  • Paper-IV, General Studies III(commences at 09:00 hrs and ends at 12:00 hrs)
  • Paper-V, General Studies IV (commences at 14:00 hrs and ends at 17:00 hrs)

01 November, 2017

  • Paper-A, Indian Language (commences at 09:00 hrs and ends at 12:00 hrs)
  • Paper-B, English (commences at 12:00 hrs and ends at 17:00 hrs)

03 November, 2017

  • Paper-VI, Optional Paper (commences at 09:00 hrs and ends at 12:00 hrs)
  • Paper-VII, Optional Paper II (commences at 12:00 hrs and ends at 17:00 hrs)

The UPSC CSE Preliminary Exam pattern

The prelim exam consists of two questions papers, with each paper having 200 multiple choice questions (MCQ) of 200 marks each. The duration of the exams is 2-hours per paper.

Paper-I has questions related to the current affairs, Indian National Movement, Indian History, Indian & World Geography, Governance, Indian polity, General topics such as climate change, environmental ecology and bio-diversity, Economic and Social Development, General Science.

Paper-II covers varied topics such as questions related to logical reasoning, problem-solving, interpersonal skills, comprehension, decision-making ability, numerical skills and general mental ability.

The UPSC Main Exam pattern

The main examination for UPSC CSE is marked out of 2025. There are nine papers in all, spread across 5 days. The total marks for the written exam are 1750. Candidates must qualify the English paper as well as the Indian language paper. The merit list is arrived at after considering individual marks in all the papers.

Civil Service Exam Interview

The interview is part of the main. Candidates are interviewed to assess their personality. The interview is marked out of 275 marks.
