How to Write a Personal Statement?

Here are some recommendations which help you to create persuasive and effective personal statement for the university or future job.

Nowadays, it is extremely important to have good writing skills because the major portion of information is learned via reading of texts. An ability to create good texts can thus give you a chance not only to have good grades during your school years, but also to enroll to a good university, and then to find a respectable job.

What Is a Personal Statement?

One may ask why writing skills are so important nowadays. The trick is that modern undergraduates who want to enroll to the university and young graduates looking for a job should be able to create one and the same text – a personal statement. What is it? A personal statement is a short story about you, your life, and your professional and academic achievements. In general, it is a good chance to present yourself in the most advantageous way.
Nowadays, different people must create their personal statements in two cases: when seeking admission to the university, and when they are looking for a job. The size of text itself will depend on its purpose: undergraduates must create a text meeting a strict requirement of size (no more than 4,000 characters, which is about 700 words), while job seekers should tell about themselves in no more than 100-150 words only. Therefore, it is very important to know what you should include into your personal statement and what you should not. To achieve that perfect balance, use our practical recommendations below to learn how to write your personal statement for the first time.

Useful Tips to Make Your Personal Statement More Effective

Notwithstanding the final purpose of a personal statement, it should be written about your advantages and best features, as it is a good (and sometimes the only) chance for you to 'sell' yourself. Therefore, try to concentrate on your strong points only and forget about your disadvantages for a while. Here are some practical recommendations with the help of which you will be able to create a perfect text.

  1. Have enough time to write.

  2. It seems obvious, but many people don't care about time. It is impossible to create a good personal statement quickly because you will write and rewrite this text several times. Unfortunately, the very first draft of such a text cannot be good enough to use; therefore, it will need polishing. Undergraduates should cope with the text so that to have time to add it to a set of documents necessary for the university application, while job seekers don't have any time limits.

  3. Don't retell your biography.

  4. It is important to mention that a personal statement is not a place to retell your biography if these facts are not connected with the main aim of the text – to show your advantages. Moreover, it is better to give some specific information about you (interesting work experience, academic achievements, etc.).

  5. Don't mention information from other sources known to the reader.

  6. The most widespread mistake of both students and job seekers is that all of them give information already learned by a reader from their CVs or a set of documents required for university admission. Try to avoid this mistake because it makes your personal statement very boring.

  7. Know your audience.

  8. While writing, it is important to remember that you create texts for an official institution and therefore, it is strictly recommended to avoid different jokes, funny stories, etc. As a result, this text may define your future for several years, so try to be more serious. Application officers and HR managers are not likely to understand your specific humor.

  9. Use formal style.

  10. This point is closely connected with the previous one. Keep the balance: try to avoid an ingratiating tone, on the one hand, but be straight at the same time. In this case, your personal statement will look like a good business proposal.

  11. Specify your goals.

  12. It is highly desirable to give some information about your specific goals for the future. To do this, you may ask yourself such questions as: "What am I waiting from this university?", "Why do I need this very profession/vacancy?", "What are my career/academic goals?", etc. Answers to all these questions will help the readers to evaluate you as a future student/employee.

  13. Create several personal statements for different places.

  14. It is impossible to write only one personal statement for several universities or for several companies at once. If you want to send out documents or CV to several places, be creative and write as many individualized personal statements as necessary.

  15. Be honest.

  16. A personal statement is a good place for you to shine. However, it doesn't mean that you must praise yourself or exaggerate your achievements. Moreover, it is strictly prohibited to include fictitious information into such a text because all facts can be checked.

  17. Read the final variant aloud.

  18. Remember that this paper is meant to 'sell' you, your services, or your talents. Therefore, it is necessary to persuade the readers that you are that very person who deserves to study at this university or to work in this company. To achieve that, try to read the finished variant aloud and evaluate whether you (or your family and friends) would be persuaded by this text or not. If not, it will be necessary to rewrite it once again.

  19. Revise the text.

  20. Our first recommendation was about time management; remember about it and try to find time to revise the finished text. Clearly, there should be no grammar and spelling mistakes. The text itself should be concise and coherent to make you a successful candidate for a place at the university or in a big company.

Hopefully, all these recommendations will help you to compose substantial and effective texts to persuade admission officers or HR managers that you are the best candidate to get a certain place in the educational community or in the company. Just remember that this text will give you a good chance to summarize all your professional or academic achievements and describe your future goals. More recommendations about writing and credible companies helping with that process may be found a 10 page papers. Good luck with your applications and self-presentation!

Great post. As job seekers, we have evolved from bio-data, resume, CV and now to a personal statement. I still remember the first bio-data I wrote many years ago - name, father's name, age, sex, address, education etc like a monotonous recital. It's refreshing to know that nowadays one has to write this personal statement.

I think this statement would give the candidate a free rein of what and how he or she can sell or make themselves liable for the job. To the HR selectors, the personal statement presents a chance to pick up the ones that stand out, ones that have quality narration that's precise and unique and hence worth employing.

I fully agree with your suggestion of practicing writing personal statements for different applications or university as I am sure its going to get better and better with each draft. It's a creative way to market oneself with flair and class.

A very good article presented in a lucid way.

Personal statement writing skills can only come with practice. It may not be that impressive in black and white for the first time. So revision is a must and we should not be afraid of multiple revisions. Those people who are not having good control in English language may have some difficulty in the beginning. I will suggest that they can write the brief in their own language in which they feel comfortable and can express nicely in concise ways. After that try to translate in English using a dictionary and preferably a thesaurus also. I hope this will help in achieving in making of a good personal statement.

I liked the article. Many people are not able to express themselves in a neat and appealing way due to their inadequate knowledge of the language or not knowing the present methodology. These days who you are is not important but how you present yourselves is important. You should be able to showcase your abilities, positives and achievements in a very appealing way. These days many undergraduates and postgraduates are hiring somebody else to make an appealing resume but when they come for a personal discussion they don't even know what is there in their document. This is really a very sorry state of affairs.
The author made very good attempt to explain the importance of the personal statement and my appreciations to the author.
