Online Registration for Common Entrance Exam for Design 2018 (CEED 2018)

The dates for the online application for the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) 2018-19 have been announced. Details of the application process, eligibility criteria, important dates, exam pattern, syllabus and important study topics are provided here.

IIT Bombay has announced the dates for the online applications for Common Entrance Exam for Design 2018-2019 (CEED -2018-2019) for admission into the Post Graduate programme offered at various institutions. The online application is for admission into the Master of Design (MDes) programmes at the following institutions –

  • IIT Bombay
  • IIT Hyderabad
  • IIT Guwahati
  • IIT Kanpur
  • IISc Bangalore

About CEED 2018-19

The CEED is a test constituted to assess the aptitude of aspirants hopeful of joining a Master's programme in Designing. Candidates are tested for their aptitude for design, involving various skills such as –

  • Drawing skills
  • Creativity
  • Visual perception ability
  • Problem solving skills
  • Logical reasoning
  • Communication

Eligibility criteria for CEED -2018

The minimum qualification requirement is as under –

  • A four-year undergraduate degree in any of the following fields or their equivalent after Higher Secondary School Certificate (10+2)

    1. Architecture
    2. Engineering
    3. Interior Design
    4. Design

  • Candidates with an undergrad degree in Fine Arts are also eligible to apply
  • Candidates who have completed a 5 years programme in Graphic Design Arts, can also apply
  • Candidates pursuing a postgraduate programme in Arts, Computer Application or Science can apply as well

Candidates who appeared in previous CEED are also eligible to appear for the current test. There is neither age limit nor a restriction on the number of attempts permitted.

Application procedure for CEED-2018

Registration of applications for the CEED is being done online. There is no other mode of registering for the exam. Applicants can register through the official website (http://www.ceed.iitb.ac.in/2018/). The last date for registering is 10 November 2017.

  • The registration fee for women candidates and those belonging to the SC, ST and PwD category is INR.1100 + GST
  • General list candidates have to pay a registration fee of INR 2200 +GST

The payment can be made through Net banking, Credit Card or Debit Card. The applicant will be prompted to the payment portal when submitting the registration form. As mentioned above, the last date for submitting the application is 10 November 2017. Prospective candidates can register and make the payment on or before this date, without incurring a late fee.

Candidates who do not pay the requisite fee by the deadline can still make the payment with a late fee of INR.500 + GST. The last date for accepting registration fee with the late charge is 17 November 2017.

Important dates for CEED 2018

  • Online registration – 9 October, 2017 – 10 November, 2017
  • Online Registration with late fee – 11 November 2017 – 17 November 2017
  • Admit card can be downloaded from – 25 December 2017 onward
  • CEED 2018 examination date – 20 January 2018
  • CEED results declaration – 05 March 2018
  • Score cards of CEED 2018 available for download – 05 March 2018 onwards

Test pattern for CEED – 2018

  • The exam will be conducted on 20 January 2018, Saturday between 10:00 & 13:00 hours
  • The exam will be split into two parts consisting of Part-A & Part-B
  • Both sections make up the main test and are mandatory and hence must be attempted in full
  • Part-A will be conducted between 10:00 & 11:00 hours and Part-B from 11:00 hours to 13:00 hours

Part-A of CEED 2018

Part-A of the CEED is a computer based test and will consist of objective type questions. It is an aptitude test intended to gauge visual and spatial ability, analytical & logical reasoning, environmental & social awareness, observation & design sensitivity and language & creativity and design thinking and problem solving skills of the candidates

Part-B of CEED 2018

This section will comprise of questions meant to test the candidate's drawing, design and writing skills. It is a written test, and answers will need to be entered in the answer books, issued to the candidates. However, the questions will appear on the computer screen.

CEED 2018 – Syllabus for Part-A Exam

Visual and spatial ability

Pictorial & diagrammatic questions that will test the candidate's understanding of and/or handling of 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships, understanding of practical scientific and mechanical concepts.

Analytical & logical reasoning

To test the candidate's aptitude, to view both qualitative and quantitative info and determine patterns within that given info. Test of the candidate's ability, to assess ideas, opinions and explanations against applicable criteria. To test the candidate's ability to apply structured thinking and reasoning, to read through a short descriptive piece, and respond to the questions. Additionally, there will be brainteasers and data interpretation.

Environmental & social awareness

Test of general knowledge based on environmental factors, including weather, climate, natural resources, population, vegetation, pollution and water and their effects on infrastructure, environment and products etc. And an awareness of various cultural and social influences and their relationship with design, as well as knowledge of environmentally sustainable and socially responsible design, history of sculpture, art and literature.

Observation & design sensitivity

A knack of identifying hidden properties in everyday things, situations, people and events and being able to apply them to concepts of design. The ability to pay attention to details, analyse, classify and reason etc.

Language & creativity

Knowledge of basic English – comprehension, grammar and vocabulary skills. Possess the capacity to apply creative alternatives and possess the skill to think out of the box.

Design thinking and problem solving

An ability to transform signs and symbols, metaphors and visual analogies into the design, as well as the knack to understand complexity, detect problems, create substitutes, and weigh possibilities before selecting solutions.

  • Drawing – The skill to proportionally sketch products, scenes and people maintaining a good composition, shading and perspective
  • Creativity – The skill to use innovative ideas and come up with exceptional and diverse solutions
