Indian Navy online recruitment for Sailors for Senior Secondary Recruits August 2018

The Indian Navy invites applications from unmarried male candidates to be enrolled as sailors for Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR) course which will begin in August next year.

Eligibility criteria

  1. Educational Qualification: You should have passed 10+2 exam with Maths and Physics and at least one of the following subjects – Chemistry or Biology or Computer science.

  2. Age criteria: You should have been born between 1st August 1997 to 31st July 2001 (both dates inclusive).

  3. Medical standards and health criteria: You should have a minimum height of 157 cms, with proportionate weight and chest, with minimum chest expansion of 5 cms. You must have overall good health, both physically & mentally. Any health issue which would prevent you from performing your duties on board a ship or ashore during peace or war conditions will make you ineligible to apply.

    Visual standards requirement: Without Glasses – Better eye: 6/6; Worse eye: 6/9; With Glasses - Better eye: 6/6; Worse eye: 6/6.

    Tattoos: Ensure that you do not have permanent body tattoos other than on the inner face of forearms & on the reverse side of palm/ back side of the hand.

  4. Skills: It is desirable to be proficient in swimming, other sports and varied extra-curricular activities.

Note: If you have been declared permanent medically unfit by any Armed Forces hospital in any previous recruitment for the same entry in the Indian Navy, then you should not apply.

SSR Selection criteria & tests

The selection is done on the basis of merit as per your performance in a written test as well as a qualifying Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and being found fit in the medical exams. The various selection tests are:
  1. Written test: For this test you answer objective-type questions of four sections. The test is of one hour duration and you need to pass in all sections as well as in aggregate. The paper will be available in both Hindi and English. The four sections are English, Science, Maths and General Knowledge. The questions are based on the syllabus of Class 10+2 & can be checked out at the Indian Navy official website.

  2. Physical Fitness Test (PFT): You need to complete a 1.6 km run in 7 minutes, do 20 squat ups and 10 push-ups.

  3. Medical exam: Even if you pass the initial medical exam, you need to also undergo a final medical exam at INS Chilka and only when you passin this exam will you be eligible for enrollment for training. You will not be allowed to appeal for a review after this final enrolment medical exam. All the medical exams will be conducted by qualified authorized military doctors.

Training process

Your training for the course will begin in August 2018. In case of unsatisfactory performance during any part of the basic or professional training, you will be discharged as unsuitable. The full training process includes:
  • Basic training at INS Chilka: 22 weeks

  • Professional training: After successful completion of basic training, you will begin professional training in an allotted trade in various Naval Training establishments. You will be assigned a branch/trade as per the service requirement.

Once you successfully complete the entire training process, you will be engaged in the Indian Navy for an initial period of 15 years.

Benefits on joining as Indian Navy SSR

  1. Pay and allowances: You will receive a stipend of Rs.14,600/- per month during the initial training period. Subsequently you will be placed in Level 3 of the Defence Pay Matrix of pay scale Rs. 21, 700-Rs. 69, 100 + MSP of Rs. 5,200/- per month + DA as applicable.

  2. Promotion: You are entitled to promotion up to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer-I, which is Level 8 of the Defence Pay Matrix of pay scale of Rs. 47, 600 – Rs.1,51,100 + MSP of Rs 5,200/- per month + DA as applicable. You can also avail of opportunities to the level of a commissioned officer based on your performance and qualification through the prescribed exams.

  3. Medical: You are entitled to medical treatment, leave travel concessions for yourself and your dependents, group housing benefits, annual & casual leave, children education allowances, etc. Post retirement benefits include pension, gratuity and leave encashment. Insurance cover of Rs 37.50 lakhs is also provided for all sailors.

  4. General: You are entitled to receive free of cost food, accommodation, books, uniforms, etc. during training as well as thereafter.

How to apply

You must submit your application online (no other mode is allowed) at the Indian Navy's official website, uploading the scanned documents in original where required, namely the Matric certificate and the 10+2 mark sheet. All documents should be very clear, as also the scanned photo which must have a blue background.

Here's the guideline to register online:
  1. Register at Indian Navy website with your email ID, this email ID being required for future communications.

  2. Log in with the registered email ID and go to 'Current Opportunities', where you should click on the 'Apply' button.

  3. Once you fill up the online application form completely, without leaving any blanks, double check that the details are correct, as also all requisite documents have been correctly uploaded. Then click on the 'Submit' button.

Note: There is an optional facility to upload the application from a Common Service Centre (CSC) anywhere in India, paying a fee of Rs.60+GST.

After online application submission

The screening panel will sort out the applications State-wise. The qualifying cut-off percentage of a particular State may be increased if more number of applications with a higher percentage are received. Short-listing of candidates will be on the basis of 10+2 marks, with the cut-off percentage being calculated taking into consideration the best of 5 subjects (including Maths & Physics which are mandatory.)

By the end of January 2018 (tentative schedule), the call-up letters cum Admit Card will be uploaded on the official website for eligible short listed candidates. This will provide the date, time and place for the SSR recruitment tests, which are scheduled for the months of March/April 2018. You have to appear for the tests at the centre allotted to you.

At the recruitment test centre, you must produce all original certificates and mark sheets along with Domicile certificate and NCC certificate (if held). The details in these documents should match the details provided in your online application form, otherwise your candidature will be cancelled. The results of the written test will be announced on the same day. If you qualify from this test, then you will appear for the physical fitness test and the preliminary medical exam, these taking place over one or two days.

On 27th June 2018, the merit list of all qualifying candidates will be put up at the Indian Navy's official website. If your name is on the list, then you need to report to INS Chilka for the final medical exam on the date and at the time mentioned in your call letter (along with the call letter you will also receive a Police Verification form which needs to be submitted to verify your antecedents). At this time, you must submit self-attested certificates which you had submitted in the online application process, along with the original certificates.

Last date to submit online application: 10th December 2017.

Note: No inquiries will be entertained regarding recruitment/enrolment after a period of 6 months.
