Indian Navy online recruitment application for Stewards, Chefs & Hygienists for MR-Oct 2018 course

The Indian Navy provides multiple opportunities to individuals to join as Sailors and serve the nation with pride. One such opportunity is now open, with the Navy inviting applications from unmarried male candidates for enrolment as Stewards, Chefs and Hygienists for MR – October 2018 batch, with the course commencing in October next year.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Educational Qualifications: You must have passed Matriculation exam from an Education Board recognized by the Central Govt. / a State Govt.

  2. Age criteria: You should be born between 1st October 1997 to 30th September 2001 (both dates inclusive.)

Brief job profile


You will be preparing vegetarian and non-vegetarian food as per menu (note that you will be handling meat products too) and need to account for ration. You may be allotted other duties as per the Navy service requirement.


You will be serving food in the Officers' mess areas as waiters. You will be given duties related to housekeeping, accounting of funds, wine and stores, preparation of the menu, etc. and any other duties as per the Navy service requirements.


You will maintain hygiene in the wash rooms and other areas and perform duties as allotted to you as per the Navy service requirements.


Pay & Allowance

During the initial training period, you will receive a stipend of Rs.14,600/- per month. Once you have successfully completed the training, then you will be placed in Level 3 of the Defence Pay Matrix of Rs.21,700-Rs.69,100 + MSP at Rs.5200 per month + DA (as applicable.)


You can avail of promotion opportunities, with prospects existing up to the rank of Master Chef Petty Officer, which is Level 8 of the Defence Pay Matrix of Rs.47,600-Rs.1,51,100 + MSP at Rs.5200 per month + DA (as applicable.) You can also avail of the opportunity to be promoted to commissioned officer if you perform well and qualify the prescribed exams.


During your training period & later, you will be provided with books, reading material, uniform and accommodation, etc free of cost. You are also entitled to receive medical treatment, leave travel concessions for yourself and dependents, group housing benefits and other privileges. You can take annual and casual leave, get benefits for education for your children, house rent allowances and post-retirement benefits such as pension, gratuity, etc. Insurance cover is also provided of Rs.37.50lakhs for all sailors as applicable.

Selection process

Selection is based on the order of merit on performance in the written test, a qualifying fitness test and fitness in medical exams.

Written Test

The objective-type question paper of 30 minutes' duration is available in Hindi and English. It has 2 sections: (i) Science & Mathematics; (ii) General Knowledge. You must apps in both sections and in aggregate. The syllabus of this test can be checked at the Indian Navy website:
Important note: At the time of the written exam, you must produce all original certificates, mark sheets, Domicile certificate and NCC certificate (if holding this) along with the CLAC. The details provided in your online application should match with the original documents, otherwise your candidature will be cancelled.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

It is mandatory to qualify in PFT for selection. Before appearing for PFT, you are advised to clean ear wax and have tartar removed from teeth.
The test includes: (i) 1.6km run, to be completed in 7 minutes; (ii) 20 squats; (iii) 10 push-ups. Note that undergoing the PFT is at your own risk
It is desirable to be proficient in sports, swimming & extra-curricular activities.

Medical Exam & requirements

Authorised military doctors will conduct the medical exam as per the medical standards prescribed in current regulations which are applicable to sailors on entry. The initial medical exam for recruitment will be considered only provisionally and fitness is subject to the fitness in the final medical exam.

Minimum height: 157cms., with appropriate weight and chest measurements. Minimum chest expansion should be 5cms. The minimum height requirement may be relaxed for tribal candidates as per the current regulations.

Visual standards: (i) For Chefs and Stewards: 6/36 for better eye and worse eye, without glasses; 6/9 for better eye, with glasses and 6/12 for worse eye, with glasses. (ii) For Hygienists: 6/60 for better eye and worse eye, without glasses; 6/9 for better eye, with glasses and 6/24 for worse eye, with glasses.

Overall you must possess good health, both physically and mentally. You should not have any such health problems which will likely interfere with the efficient performance of your onshore or offshore duties, whether in peace times or in war conditions. In case you have been declared permanent medically unfit by any Armed Forces Hospital in previous recruitment process for the same entry in the Indian Navy, then you are ineligible to apply for this course.

Training session

You will start training for the course in October 2018. There will be an initial 15-weeks' basic training at INS Chilka, followed up by Professional training in the allotted trade in various training establishments of the Indian Navy. If there is unsatisfactory performance at any time during the training period, then you could be discharged as "Unsuitable".

Initial engagement

Once you have successfully completed the initial training, the initial engagement is for a period of 15 years.

How to apply

Submit your application online at Ensure that you scan and upload all required documents in original. Before applying itself, keep ready your Matric certificate, 10th mark sheet and domicile certificate. You will also be required to upload a photography, which should be of good quality with a blue background.

The steps to apply –
Register at the website with your email ID if not already registered. This same email ID will be used for all later communications with you.
  • Log in with your registered email ID and click on 'Current Opportunities'.

  • Click on 'Apply' button and fill up all the details of the online application form. Double check that all details are correct and all requisite documents & your photo have been uploaded before you click on 'Submit' button.

  • Mention clearly in the online application from which entry you are applying for, namely Chef or Steward or Hygienist. You can indicate as many preferences as you wish to opt for, so that having regard to your rank in order of merit, due consideration may be given to your preferences when making appointments. Note that you will be considered for appointment to only those entries for which you expressed your preferences and no request will be entertained for addition/alteration later.

  • You can also upload your application online at any Common Service Centre (CSC) in India, paying a fee of Rs.60+GST (this is an optional facility). However, note that the recruitment itself to the Indian Navy is totally free and you should not pay an agency or individual any money who promises guaranteed recruitment with the Navy and/or claims to have rapport with the personnel of the Naval Recruitment Organisation.

    Important dates

    1. Last date to submit application: 17th December 2017.

    2. Call up letter-cum-Admit cards (CLACs): End of January 2018.

    3. Recruitment tests: March / April 2018.

    4. Test results: Results of the written test will be announced on the same day & those who qualify will then undergo PFT and the preliminary medical exam which may take one to two days.

    5. Merit list: 24th August 2018 – This list will be prepared from all candidates who qualify in all respects, depending on vacancies. The candidates whose names are on this list then should report to INS Chilka for final medicals. At this time, they need to produce the self-attested certificates submitted at the time on application, along with the original certificates. You will also be required to forward a Police Verification form along with the Call letter for the final medical exam.
