Introduction to the JEE Joint Entrance Examination 2018 Advanced

The JEE Advanced 2018 was previously known as the IIT-JEE entrance examination. This used to be the entrance examination for gaining admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology. Students who gain merit in this entrance examination are eligible for admission to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology in India which are the premier enginnering colleges in India. The other institutes to which admission can be applied for are RGIPT, IISERs and IISc.

The JEE Advanced is considered as one of the toughest examinations in the world. The admission rate is very low and hovers around 1 to 2% of the total appearances.

Date and Time of JEE Advanced 2018 examination

The JEE Advanced 2018 examination will be held on 20 May 2018. This day is a Sunday.
The examination is composed of two papers. The first paper will be from 9 am to 12 noon IST. The second paper will be from 2 pm to 5 pm IST.

Mode of Examination for JEE Advanced 2018

The JEE Advanced 2018 will be completely Computer Based examination and will be conducted through authorised centres only.
The exam will be in two papers. Each paper is of 3 hours duration and will be presented in English and Hindi language. The choice of language will be presented to the candidate during the examination.
The JEE Advanced 2018 is being organised by IIT Kanpur.

Registration fee for Computer Based JEE Advanced Test

The fees are described in two headings, for students residing in India and for students appearing for the examination out of India.

Fees for students residing in India and Indian students of PIO or OCI

  • Female candidates from all categories: Rs 1300 + GST
  • Male Candidates from SC, ST and PwD category: Rs 1300 + GST
  • All other candidates: Rs 2600 + GST

Fees for Foreign national students residing in India

  • Foreign National students residing in India and from SAARC countries: USD 160 + GST
  • Foreign National students residing in India and from Non-SAARC countries: USD 300 + GST

Courses to which admission is gained through JEE Advanced 2018

A student who clears the JEE Advanced 2018 is eligible to contest for admissions to the following courses offered by IITs and other institutions:
  1. 4 years B. Tech.
  2. 5 years B. Arch.
  3. 5 years Dual degree courses in B.Tech. - M.Tech., B.S.-M.S.
  4. 5 years Integrated Masters: M. Tech., M.Sc. Dual Degree

Students desirous to take admissions into B. Arch. course will have to further take the JEE Advanced AAT examination. The eligibility to appear for the JEE Advanced AAT course, the student will have to clear JEE Mains, then JEE Advanced examinations.

Eligibility criteria for the JEE Advanced 2018 Entrance Examination

The JEE Advanced can be given by Indian and Foreign national applicants. The criteria are as follows:
  1. The candidate desirous to give JEE Advanced 2018 should be in the first 2,24,000 rank in the JEE Main 2018 examination. Since the JEE Main examination may have tied ranks, the number of students who can apply for the JEE Advanced may be slightly higher.
  2. The Candidate should be born on or after 1st October 1993. Candidates from SC, ST and PwD will be offered an age relaxation up to 5 years.
  3. Candidate should not have appeared for JEE Advanced 2016 or earlier examination.
  4. The candidate should have appeared for the Class XII examination only in the years 2017 or 2018.
  5. The candidate must not have accepted IIT admission to any IIT in previous years.
  6. Foreign national students should fulfil eligibility criteria from Point 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Further criteria for admission

Candidates who qualify through the JEE Advanced 2018 Entrance Examination will have to fulfil the further criteria.
  1. A minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class XII or equivalent examination. Students from SC, ST, PwD categories should have a minimum of 65% marks.
  2. The candidate should be in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates for their respective board of examination.

The candidates who clear all the above-mentioned criteria will then have to participate in the joint seat allocation process. To participate in the joint seat allocation process, they will have to fill their choices of courses, they wish to take admission in. The process updates will be announced by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2018.
