Home remedies for acidity, heartburn and acid reflux, include a change in eating habits. Apple Cider Vinegar, green veggies, fruits like bananas can control the acid production in the gut. Learn about the best dietary changes to fight problems of the digestive system.

Heartburn, acidity or acid reflux, are a medical condition, in which the acid in the stomach gets pushed up into the throat, oesophagus and mouth. When the acid reaches the mouth it often leaves a sour taste. The condition per se causes an intense burning sensation in the chest region, causing immense discomfort and uneasiness.

The regurgitation of stomach acids into the oesophagus can cause a persistent dry cough and a feeling of an obstruction in the throat. Stomach acids in the throat can make one feel, as though phlegm is dripping at the back of the throat.

Medical intervention is often required, especially in people suffering from chronic acid reflux or acidity. Over the counter antacids do bring relief, but long-term use of these tablets is not without side-effects. Doctors advise precaution while prescribing antacids.

Frequent bouts of acidity can lead to serious complications, such as severe sensitivity of the teeth, constant heartburn, chest pain, Barrett's oesophagus and gastroesophageal cancer. Digestive disorders also include wind, gas and flatulence and can be controlled with home remedies.

A few lifestyle changes can forestall these complications. Here is a list of foods that reduce the occurrence of acidity. Include them in your diet and see the change –

Apple cider vinegar

Cider vinegar is an oft-recommended therapy recommended for acidity. A teaspoon of cider vinegar mixed with ½ a glass of water must be sipped along with your meal. Now, this might appear as a weird cure, for who would want to swallow an acid when they are suffering from an acid problem. The thing is that not all acids are bad – know that some acids like the apple cider vinegar can be beneficial.

Ginger tea eases heartburn

A herbal tea concoction made using ginger root is easy to prepare. All that is required is fresh ginger and water. Peel and wash a small piece of ginger and finely chop or grate it. Add it to a saucepan with a cup of water and bring the water to a rolling boil. Allow it to simmer for 2-3 minutes. Cover and allow the water temperature to drop, to just tepid. Strain and sip the water, after every meal.

Chewing on the ginger bits can be more beneficial.

Fennel seeds

Fennel seeds (saunf) are often served after meals, in most homes, especially in North India. If you notice, 'saunf' is also served in restaurants, along with the bill. It's because fennel seeds have excellent digestive properties that soothe the stomach acids.

Chewing on a ½ a tsp. of fennel seeds, after every meal, can aid the digestion process and relieve symptoms of acidity.

Alternatively, stew 5-6 tsps., of fennel seeds in 1 litre of water to make a strong brew. Cool, strain and drink this water instead of regular water, especially after meals.

Bananas are perhaps one of the easiest foods to digest, which is why they also make up a baby's first solid food. Yellow bananas are especially good for reducing symptoms associated with acidity. When consumed, the fleshy part of the fruit covers the oesophagus, thereby, reducing the uneasiness caused by the acid reflux. Eating a banana after a meal can help reduce the burning sensation in the chest and throat, caused by the acid reflux.

Cold milk

Drinking a glass of cold milk, without additives, is a great remedy for heartburn. Milk is known to neutralise the acids in the stomach, and hence prevents the reflux of acid. Cold milk is also recommended for expectant women who suffer from severe morning sickness.

Yoghurt and buttermilk

Yoghurt and buttermilk have the same soothing effect on the stomach, as cold milk has. Yoghurt is, in fact, more beneficial than milk, because it contains good bacteria that help with better digestion.

Yogurt helps with acidity

Eating yoghurt makes the good bacteria in your digestive tract flourish and helps keep it healthy. Include yoghurt and/or buttermilk in your diet, to calm the heartburn causing digestive acids.

One of the major causes of acid reflux is the food we eat. Certain foods trigger excess production of hydrochloric acid in the digestive tract. These include deep-fried foods, oil-rich foods and spicy foods. If your meals consist of oil-rich and hot foods and you find yourself suffering from acid reflux, then you will need to cut down on the oil and chillies in your diet. Additionally, include a bowl of oats or wheat porridge, during breakfast.

Add oats flour to your chapatti dough and notice the difference in your health. Oats have a lot of fibre in them (soluble and insoluble kind) and they help in mopping up the extra acids in the gut, decreasing the chances of it causing heartburn.

Coconut water

Fresh coconut water is not just a thirst quencher that replenishes the water in the body, but also a healthy drink - an excellent source of electrolytes, mainly potassium. The electrolytes present in coconut water help maintain a proper pH balance, which is vital for managing acidity.

Drink coconut water often – it is a safe and healthy drink.

Green leafy veggies

Green leafy vegetables are a powerhouse of nutrients. They are also rich in water and fibre, both of which help in the reduction of stomach acids. A fibre rich diet is highly recommended for anyone suffering from acid reflux problem. Fibre helps the good bacteria flourish in the digestive tract and this helps with the digestion and a decrease in episodes of acid reflux.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has almost miraculous healing properties. Its use is suggested for healing various conditions. Aloe Vera juice and gel for internal consumption are available off-the-shelf. Drinking the juice of Aloe Vera soothes the acidic turmoil that causes heartburn.

Alternatively, get an Aloe Vera plant and enjoy its fresh gel. Just pluck a leaf, use a knife to slit it in half, and scoop the sticky flesh from the leaf. The gel should be clear white. Have a teaspoon of the freshly scooped gel to combat acidity.

Citrus fruits

It might seem odd that citrus fruits that are acidic in nature can help fight acidity. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, which is a natural antioxidant and helps fight acidity. Have a glass of fresh lime juice with your meals and say goodbye to heartburn.
