This is a fairly new concept for Indian Healthcare system. Indian Healthcare professionals have been performing aspects related to patient navigation at various levels in their day to day professional life in a hospital setting but did not have a name.

Healthcare has become highly compartmentalized due to a high degree of specialization. Hence for a novice patient, it is extremely difficult to get into a hospital and come out with all aspects of care delivered in an acceptable time frame.

For instance, someone with a cancer of the oral cavity(common in India) need to be seen in the OPD by at least 2-4 specialities, then investigations, CT/PET scan, Biopsy, Multi-disciplinary team discussions with all the results, then decide what the patient is suited for surgery/radiotherapy or chemotherapy. All this requires intricate coordination. Patients and their families often get lost in the system due to inherent complexities and barriers in the healthcare delivery systems.

A Patient Navigator has a wide a range of opportunities to help a patient, right from the simple task of helping them book the next appointment or guiding them through the whole process of the oral cancer scenario that I've mentioned.

I think the candidates' aptitude is important before they apply for the course. Communication skills and common sense are the keys to being a good patient navigator. It's more like a secretary to a busy consultant and a receptionist at a busy hospital put together. One needs patience, a passion to help people, empathy towards patients and families going through emotional difficulties and practical issues related to clinical and administrative issues in the hospital.

In my view, it is a great potential to lead on to a good career either here or overseas. People who have a little knowledge about healthcare but are stuck without timely promotions or career progression can think about this as their prior experience and the new degree will open doors in good corporate hospitals if they have the right attitude.
