IntroductionImagine that you are performing on a stage and there is no audience. How would you feel? Audiences are very important for the performers as they are the ones who see and listen to them, clap and shower appreciation if they like the performance. With the audience in place, performers get to know the feedback about the performance as to whether it was good or bad. Performers also feel motivated to perform when there is large audience present compared to when audience strength is thin. Ultimately any performance has no value if it is done in a closed room. So the audience is a prerequisite for any stage performers. But is just having an audience in numbers to view the performance sufficient? Type of audience and whether they are disciplined or not also matters to the stage performers. The in disciplined audience can sometimes demotivate and distract the performers. Both audience and performers play a successful role in the success of an event. So let us have a look at what is the expected quality and behaviors expected of a good audience.
Characteristics of a good Audience
ConclusionAudience without performer and performer without audience both seem to be incomplete. Even if a performer is well prepared and confident of his performance still he or she will wish that they get the support of the sincere audience. Sometimes performers only know the worth of their performance after seeing the response from the audience. For example, if all the people in the audience clap loudly together and say words like "Once more, Once more!" performer will know that his performance was too good. On the other hand, if the response of the audience is lackluster, the performer will know that performance was not up to the mark. But we should make sure that wherever we are there as an audience we should always be well behaved, take interest and encourage the performers.
The audience for a performer is the motivators. The performer will get motivated once he sees that the audience are more and they are showing interest without making any noise or creating any disturbance. An appreciation from a viewer will enhance the levels of the performer and he will perform at a higher level. So viewers will play an important role in the performance of the artist. When a small kid comes to you with a small piece of paper on which he painted a picture which can't be identified also and when you see that if you appreciate him for his initiative he will get motivated and definitely improve his performance. So motivation from the audience is very important for a performer. If the performer knows that the audience is very much knowledgeable, he will try to give a good presentation so that he will get appreciations from the good audience.
Only the first timers would understand how the audience made or broke their first performance dreams.
Generally, the audience is good, sportive people, more so in the West when compared to India. Such audiences have a positive effect on the individual or teams on the stage and encourage them to perform better. As members sitting in the audience we need patience. Many of us would have been to nursery school kids annual day. If you recollect, parents would be in a hurry to leave as soon as their son's or daughter's performance is over.
Discipline becomes very important if the performance is that of a classical singer or musicians or even children performing their first play on stage. I've noticed at times when the performance is off to a below average start or the artist fumbles due to stage fright, some people start laughing, booing or even passing sarcastic remarks.
As members of an audience, we need to have interest and a desire to listen to the performance. A good audience puts, the performer at ease, claps or stands up at the end of a recital, this encourages and builds confidence in the other upcoming performers.
Sometimes, I've noticed people eating snacks making noises that carry around when the hall is quite. Some people start sleeping and snoring at school drama, Why should someone come and snore and be an embarrassment?
Some members in the crowd keep taking so many pictures and videos that it gives an impression that they have not come to 'listen or 'see'the visual treat but only to keep getting up to get better pictures, this is also annoying.
For a stage performer. he always expects a good audience who are supportive, reciprocate and also with him in the process of the function. While performing one must take care to watch the mood of the audience. If they are silent and not reacting, then it seems that they have taken the play or the act to their heart and watching it with utmost dedication and expects more sincere performance. If the performer is giving a speech, then involving the participation of the audience is must. That means in between questions must be asked as to how they listened to him so far and how they have understood the concept he was telling. Such reciprocation would help to further improve the performance. One thing is sure, if one cannot satisfy the audience and they leave one after other from the hall, that is the displeasure sign from them.
