Some lesser-known historical monuments of Delhi

Delhi, a historical city, frequented by tourists from India and abroad, present many well-known and little-known tourist spots. This article mentions some little-known historical monuments of the city for the benefit of the tourists interested in history.

Delhi is a historical city full of various monuments of different eras. The tourists who visit Delhi, enjoy India Gate, Old Fort (Purana Qila), Red Fort (Lal Qila), Jama Mosque, President's House, Nehru Park, etc. But, in addition to these well-known tourist spots, there are some more ancient buildings/monuments in Delhi, which, although little-known, attract the tourists who are interested in historical monuments. In my previous article Old age charms of old havelis of Delhi, I mentioned some historical 'havelis' (mansions) of Delhi. In the present article, some more ancient monuments of Delhi have been mentioned for the benefit of tourists interested in historical monuments.

Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal

This ancient building is located in the southern ridge forest. Many people think that the 'mahal' is haunted. Without going into the discussion about haunted place, it must be stated it was built in the fourteenth century by Firoze Shah Tughlaq. This 'mahal' was built as a hunting lodge. Architecturally, the building resembles 'Malcha Mahal', again located in the ridge of Delhi. The entrance of this ancient building and the spacious courtyard take the tourist to the fourteenth century. The building is not protected and can be visited at any time.

Jahaj Mahal

From the name, it is easily understood that the building is in the shape of a ship. This building is located in the Mehrauli area of Delhi. It was built during Lodhi rule in Delhi and was used as a pleasure retreat. It is an interesting place which provides a soothing environment if a Delhi-ite wants to escape from the din and hustle-bustle of the busy city life. The 'mahal' is located very near to the Qutab Minar and can be visited by the tourists along with Qutab Minar, Qila Lal Kot and Sanjay Van.

Hijron ka Khanquah

This is a spiritual place for the eunuchs of Delhi and nearby places. It is also located in Mehrauli area very near to the 'Jahaj Mahal' mentioned above. The tourists can see forty-nine tombs of forty-nine eunuchs in the place. These tombs are made of white marble. A bigger tomb is of the sister of a spiritual leader popularly known as 'Sheikh Baba'. The accompanying mosque was built during Lodhi era. This place is very serene and peaceful.

Bijay Mandal

This structure can be seen in the Kalu Sarai area of south Delhi. The dilapidated structure was built during the reign of Muhammad-bin Tughlaq during the fourteenth century. Most probably, it was a palace of the eccentric emperor. It is positioned on a raised platform mounted by another higher platform. There is a shrine of a Sufi Saint (Sheikh Hasan Tahir) along with some other graves beside the Bijay Mandal.

Satpula Bridge

Satpula Bridge is located in the post Saket area in south Delhi. It was built in 1343 by Muhammad-bin Tughlaq over a Yamuna river fed stream. The seven arches with water tunnels placed below the arches have been damaged but are still visible. The area gives a soothing sensation because of the surrounding greenery.

Final words

Delhi, although frequented by tourists from various parts of India and also from abroad, presents many more historical monuments, which are not very familiar to the general tourists. It is expected that the Government and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) would take effective measures to protect these historical monuments which remind us of bygone eras.

There are many monuments which we don't know or haven't seen like :

The tomb of Razia Sultan: She was the first female ruler of Delhi. This tomb is situated near the Turkman Gate. This is set on a platform having four walls and no roof. It has the grave of Razia Sultana.

Lodhi Garden: It is situated on Lodhi Road. It has tombs of Mohammad Shah and Sikandar Lodi. Many people come to this garden for walk and jogging.

Few other places like Humayun's tomb, Old Fort, Feroz Shah Kotla Fort, Tuglakhabad Fort, Safdarjung Tomb, Isa Khan's Tomb, Alai Darwaza etc are also less known even to the people of Delhi.

Thanks for reading this article, Mr Gupta. Two small corrections! You have mentioned Safdarjung's Fort. It should be Safdarjung's Tomb. Safdarjung did not build any fort. He was the Subedar Nawab of Oudh. Razia Sultana was not the first ruler of Delhi.
