National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi has issued the admission notice for the 3-year Diploma Course in Dramatic Arts 2018-2021. NSD is a globally reputed theatre-training institution known for its well-crafted syllabus which ensures a seamless combination of theory and practice. The work of established theatre artists is taken into account with practical performance experiences.

Diploma Course Overview

The three-year diploma course offered by the National School of Drama, Delhi is a full-time residential one in dramatic arts with 26 seats. Four seats are reserved for candidates of scheduled castes, two for candidates of scheduled tribes and seven for candidates of OBC (non-creamy layer).

The course provides a platform for students to be trained as professionals in varied fields, including acting, design, direction and other disciplines related to theatre. Hindi and English is the medium of instruction.
Selected candidates will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs.8000/- per month for academic and related expenses.

The highlight of the course is the requirement of the students to produce plays which are performed live in front of a theatre-loving audience.



Course Curriculum

The Diploma course has been designed in a way to give you exposure to national and international drama practices and unique features of theatre. Some of the learning modules will incorporate an understanding of folk theatre as well.

The first year of the course is devoted to being introduced to acting, drama techniques and design. You will also be learning about theatre history, theatre literature, and theatre aesthetics. While the first semester will deal with the basics, the second semester will be a more in-depth study of the same.

During the second year, which is the third and fourth semesters, you can select your specialization. The options are (i) Specialisation in Acting or (ii) Theatre Techniques & Design. Theatre History, Literature & Aesthetics is included as well.

The third year provides advanced training in your area of specialization.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria: You should be minimum 18 years of age and maximum 30 years of age as on 1st July 2018. The upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ST reserved category candidates.

  2. Education qualification: You must be a Graduate or have an equivalent degree in any discipline from a recognized university in India or abroad.

  3. Theatre experience: You should have participated in at least six theatre productions.

  4. General: You should have a working knowledge of English / Hindi.

  5. Desirable: (i) Three recommendations from theatre experts; (ii) Documentary proof of theatre experience.

Selection process

To be selected for the Diploma course, you first need to appear for a preliminary exam (the schedule of the test is given below). On qualifying in this test, you must attend a workshop of five days at the premises of National School of Drama, New Delhi. This workshop is scheduled from 26th to 30th June 2018. To attend the workshop, you will be paid D.A. and 3-tier Sleeper class train/bus fare from your place of residence to Delhi and back by the shortest route, on submission of ticket/cash receipt. You will also be given accommodation on a modest-sharing basis.

A committee of experts will assess the aptitude and talent of candidates. The National School of Drama reserves the right to shortlist the number of candidates for audition/preliminary test on the basis of the experience of the candidates in theatre arts.

Students selected for admission must undergo a medical test for physical fitness at NSD, Delhi. Final selection to the Diploma course is subject to clearance of the fitness test.



Preliminary test/audition

A preliminary test/audition will be conducted at the following 12 centres:
Jaipur: 1st and 2nd May 2018.
Chandigarh: 4th and 5th May 2018.
Lucknow: 7th, 8th and 9th May 2018.
Patna: 11th and 12th May 2018.
Bhubaneswar: 14th May 2018.
Kolkata: 16th, 17th and 18th May 2018.
Guwahati: 20th May 2018.
Chennai: 22nd May 2018.
Bengaluru: 24th May 2018.
Mumbai: 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th May 2018.
Bhopal: 31st May, 1st and 2nd June 2018.
Delhi: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th June 2018.

Note: The requisite study material and guidelines for the preliminary test/audition will be available with the prospectus (both in hard copy and at the website.)

How to apply

You have four options to submit your application for the course:
  1. Fill up and submit the application online at the NSD Delhi admissions website from 16th March 2018. The relevant documents can also be submitted online along with the fee of Rs.50/-. The last date to fill up the online form is 16th April 2018.

  2. You can download the application form from https://nsd.gov.in/delhi/ (16th March 2018 onwards.) Fill up the form and send it along with a Demand Draft of Rs.150/- in favor of The Director, National School of Drama, New Delhi in an envelope titled 'Application for Admission 2018-2021'. Note that if the application form is sent without the DD/Pay Order, then it will be rejected.

  3. You can obtain the application form and the prospectus from the Book Shop of the National School of Drama from 16th March 2018 to 16th April 2018 on cash payment of Rs.150/- between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on working days.

  4. You can receive the application form and prospectus (in English and Hindi) by postal mail by writing to The Dean, Academic, National School of Drama, Bahawalpur House, Bhagwandas Road, New Delhi-110001. It should be accompanied with a crossed Demand Draft / Pay Order, payable at Delhi, of Rs.225/-, including postal charges in favor of the Director, National School of Drama, New Delhi. This request for receiving the application by post must reach by 28th March 2018.
