What to do in case you miss your scheduled flight

We may be making our travel plans and trying to be going as planned. But sometimes because of reasons which are beyond our control, we may miss our flight. In such case generally, we may get panic. But instead of that if we think and act logically we can have our travel even though we may have to shed a little more money. In this article how to tackle such situations is narrated briefly,

We all travel to various destinations nationally and internationally in flights provided by various airlines operators. We all know that flights will never wait for us and we have to reach the airport at least 60 minutes in advance for checking in to a domestic flight and 120 minutes for an international flight. We should plan our travel from our place to airport accordingly and we have to reach the airport as planned.
Sometimes we will be traveling on more than one flight to reach our destination. For this travel, if we miss the flight from the initiating city we may miss our entire itinerary. So a very correct and detailed planning is required to have a happy journey. But sometimes due to certain reasons, we may be getting delayed and in such case chances of missing our flight are high. Under such conditions what we do and how we tackle the situation is very important.

The course of actions

In case you missed a flight the actions you have to take to minimize the damage are as follows.
  • Inform the Airline : You know in advance when you are traveling to the airport that there are chances of missing the flight. In such case, you should immediately call the airline operator and inform about the delay in your arrival. It is like informing the passengers by SMS to the passengers if there is any delay in the scheduled departure of the flight.
  • It will be useful for you as well as the standby passenger waiting at the airport for an open seat in the flight. The airline operator also will get a better opinion about you and will try to help in rescheduling your ticket.
  • Don't think that by informing them your job is done. You should see that you will reach the airport at least before two hours after the departure of your scheduled flight.
  • Even after making all the attempts you may not be able to reach the airport in time and may miss the flight so what to do? Don't get panic. Don't get stressed. In that stress, your mind will become blank and you may forget thinking about the next course of actions.
  • Look for alternative flights : Just take a little time and relax. Then see the scheduled board on which the departure times of flights from the airport will be displayed. Please look and see what the flights available to the destination are in the scheduled board.
  • It is preferable to look for the flights of the same airlines on which you are booked earlier. If that flight belongs to the same airline operator they may charge you only re booking fee only. But some companies charge you the difference in fares also.
  • Please make a note of those flights so that you can inform these details to the check-in counter employee.
  • Know the rule : If any person misses his flight due to some conditions which are not in his control like a flat tire, accident or traffic hindrances and informs the airline about his delay there is a rule provided to them which is called flat tire rule.To get the rule applies to you, you should inform the airline provider as soon as you expected the delay and should reach the airport within 2 hours of the departure of the scheduled flight. This rule is applicable to only confirmed ticket holders and for the same day only. The airlines should not charge any change fee or difference in the airfare. Many passengers are not aware of this rule and airlines will not make much publicity of this rule.
  • If you miss your flight and not informed the airline provider you will lose your complete itinerary and you will lose the entire money.

Even though you plan your travel correctly also there is a chance you may miss your flight due to reasons beyond your control. Hence you have to plan by giving additional margins to your travel time on the surface. There may be chances to get accommodation on other flights but it may reflect on your purse heavily. So it is always advisable that prevention is better than cure.

Missing a flight is sometimes very scary but one has to keep cool and consider the options available in hand. The author has well presented the various steps to be taken in such a scenario.

I would like to add that one should continue to communicate and have a dialogue with the airline personnel of the one which has been missed. With consistent requests and persistent efforts one can be accommodated in next available flight without any extra payment. Sometimes, if it is a rush period, they may demand some difference of the fare also as nowadays dynamic fares are in vogue.

This I am telling from my personal experience as during my active working period I used to travel a lot and many times I got accommodated in the next or subsequent flight but I had to wait in the airport for quite long and had continuous interaction with the concerned staff.
