This article provides the complete timetable of the Central Railway Matheran additional trains which have recently been launched. You will also know the ticket fare and at which station to book them.

The popular train which got its moniker of toy train has now got more operational hours. Central Railway has increased the number of train services between Neral and Matheran and Aman Lodge and Matheran from 30th March 2018.

Central Railway had earlier stopped the operations of the Neral-Matheran Light Railway train two years ago due to derailments and re-started them this year in January. Safety is ensured with brakes being managed by the engine driver instead of the earlier system of brake porters in each bogey manually applying the brakes each time it was required to do so.

About the train

Those keen to know the train's history: The train took shape from the drawing board to the tracks thanks to the creative engineering acumen of Abdul Hussein Adamjeee Peerbhoy, known locally as the "Matheran Railwaywala". Built with financial help from his father, Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy, who owned Matheran Railway, the train first chugged along in 1907, three years after construction on it was begun.

The train has one first class coach, three second class coaches, a guard section and two brake vans. The total seating capacity is for 120 passengers. There are porters in each bogey to ensure that there is proper stability & no pressure towards one part due to somebody standing or precariously leaning towards a side. The total distance from Neral, Raigad to the Matheran Hill station is 21km. over a span of three hours.

As the compact little train chugs uphill, you get some fantastic scenic views. You can even alight from the train at the Water Pipe station where the train halts to enable the passengers to get breathtaking views of the hillside.

Sounds like a good train journey to take in the beauty of nature and the forests. We had heard about Matheran, as a town that is automobile-free.

I have been in similar toy train 'The Nilgiri Moutain Railway' (built in 1908 by the British) from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam. Some of the views were good, but over the years, the numerous buildings have spoiled the natural beauty that we could see from the trains. Moreover, once we board the train, at every stop during the mornings and evenings, it gets very busy with the local population moving to and fro from work etc. I hope this does not happen with the Neral/Aman lodge - Matheran toy train.

Long back I had gone to Matheran from Neral in this toy train but at that time there were limited services, twice a day only. I did not hear about the service between Aman Lodge and Matheran, probably it has been added subsequently. The journey from Neral to Matheran in this train is really a mesmerising experience. Going through the hills, climbing slowly upward with the changing landscapes around, it is really magnificent. The more and more we climb up, more panoramic views unfold in front of us. Though one can go from Neral to Matheran by taxi also which takes hardly an hour, it is advisable to plan the journey through this train. It is really big fun and enjoyment to ride on this mode. I think we can even book the tickets online in the IRCTC portal (www.irctc.co.in).
