How to remove Hypothecation from car RC book

Planning to sell your car? The first thing you will be asked to do is to remove the bank name from RC (Registration Certificate Card) book. There are a lot of misunderstandings about RTO offices in people's mind. There are challenges people face when they visit RTO because of the officer and the office people do not respond well. But in most cases they do. This article will help you to plan when you want to remove Hypothecation from RC book. It is nothing but removing bank name from your Registration Certificate.

Before visiting RTO ofice

You must collect following copies and originals before you plan to visit the RTO Office -
Bank NOC - Original - You will get NOC from Bank. The bank also sends a NOC for the insurance company, that copy is not needed by the RTO.
Form 35 ( 2 Original Copies) - Notice of Termination of an agreement of Hire Purchase / Lease / Hypothecation. This form 35 will be given by your Loan bank when you get NOC from them. Usually, NOC will be sent to your Loan registered address, some bank do give courier address choice. You need to sign in the places marked as the registered owner.
RC Book / Card - Original
Online application payment receipt - I have given details of the process below on how to apply online for removal of Hypothecation.
Car Insurance - Copy
PUC - Copy
Hypothecation Removal Form or HPP Form. You can get this form from any Xerox shop outside RTO for Rs.2 . Just ask them to remove bank name from RC Book.
Aadhaar Card - Copy

Optional Copies to Carry: (i) Driving License (copy); (ii) Address Proof (copy) - Any address proof which has RC book address. I was not asked but it might be asked; (iii) Photos - Keep passport size photos handy, just in case; (iv) Carry originals of all ID and Address proof.

Online steps to apply for Hypothecation Termination

  1. It is all online now so don't think RTO office people will entertain you for paper-based work. Go to the Parivahan site and enter your registration number ( Basically your car number plate ).

  2. Now click on following label link. It will open the Submit Online Application (Multiple Fees Payment) page. Misc (TO/CoA/HPA/HPC/HPT/DupRC)

  3. Enter your Car Chassis Number and generate OTP using your cell phone number. The chassis number will be on your RC book. Once you click show details button it will open all details of this owner and registration of this car.

  4. On the next page now check the Termination of Hypothecation checkbox, verify all other details on the page. and submit.

  5. Now on the next page enter the insurance number, boot slot for appointment to RTO and pay the Hypothecation removal charges about Rs. 250 and print the payment receipt.

Once the online application is submitted, as mentioned above, take the mandatory documents and visit RTO on the mentioned appointment day. Carry a pen, stapler and glue as these will be required. Inquire in the RTO whom to visit to submit the application. Show him all the documents. If everything is correct, then he will keep it and you can track your application status online.

You can track your online application status through the Parivahan link then click on STATUS -> Know Your Application Status -> Enter your application number.

If you don't know your application number, then just follow the steps 1 to 4 and as soon as you select any checkbox, it will prompt your application number with a message that you have already submitted the application. You can note down that application number for future reference and tracking.


Removing Hypothecation from RC book is very easy process. It takes only 15 mins. in the Road Transport Office to complete the process. and you can monitor the application status online. Be sure to visit RTO during your day slot of appointment. It is very easy, convenient and saves you paying an agent to do this work.
