This article provides complete information about the 2018 admission process for the Diploma, Certificate and Refresher courses at Kathak Kendra, Delhi.

Kathak Kendra, New Delhi invites applications from eligible students for dance and music courses. These include elementary and advance courses as well as refresher and certificate courses.

It should be noted at the outset that once you enrol in a course, you cannot take up short or long term employment outside the Kendra, such as participating in group choreographies or any individual's or organization's paid activities. You will be allowed to participate only in an activity which is led by the course Guru, which the Guru may consider useful for training with the prior approval of the Director. Moreover, for all the courses, both dance and music, it is required to be able to converse in and read and write in Hindi or English. Good general physical and mental health is also essential.

Kathak Dance courses

Note that students of the Kendra are not permitted to enter into any other arrangement for training in dance outside the Kendra.

Refresher course

This course is of two terms of six months each. Classes for the course are held on six days a week (except on the second Saturday) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 80% attendance is mandatory. The trainee is expected to participate in the production work of the Kendra, to watch classes, and to join practical classes.

Eligibility:
  • Age: below 40 years as on 1st June 2018.

  • Qualification: You should have successfully completed Diploma (Hons.) Course/Post Diploma Course from Kathak Kendra and desires to teach Kathak or is a Dance teacher in a school/dance institution.




Elementary Courses

  1. Foundation Course: This course is for 5 years and it is preferable that you have some prior exposure to Kathak or some prior dance training in Kathak. You should have an above average sense of rhythm and music and be able to convey it through facial expressions & body movement.

    Eligibility:
    • Age: 10 to 15 years as on 1st June 2018.

    • Educational qualification: Should have completed class 3.

  2. Diploma (Pass) Course First Year: This course is for 3 years. A keen interest in any art form, such as dance, theatre, visual arts, music, etc is desirable.

    Eligibility:
    • Age: 15 to 20 years, as on 1st June 2018.

    • Educational qualification: Should have completed class 9.

Advance courses

The daily dance classes, along with the regular classes in allied subjects such as Hindustani Gaayan, Theory, Yoga and Pakhawaj/Tabla, are conducted between 8a.m. to 5 p.m. (except on the second Saturday). Hostel facility/house rent subsidy for boarding will be given to all outstation students for the Advance Courses.

  1. Diploma (Hons.) First year: This a 3 years' course. It is desirable to have training or experience in Hindustani Vocal music, Tabla or Pakhawaj with experience or interest in any other creative discipline such as Literature, Theatre, Visual arts etc.

    Eligibility:
    • Age: 18 to 23 years, as on 1st June 2018.

    • Qualification:Secondary School Certificate. Also, you should have successfully completed Diploma (Pass) Course or its equivalent training.

    • Communication skills: You should be able to read, write and have conversations in Hindi or English appropriate to your age.

  2. Post Diploma First year: This is a 2 years' course. Interest and/or experience in any other related discipline such as theatre, literature or visual arts is desirable.

    Eligibility:
    • Age criteria: 20 to 26 years, as on 1st June 2018.

    • Qualification: Senior Secondary school certificate or equivalent exam. Additionally, you should have completed Diploma (Hons.) from Kathak Kendra or equivalent (including training in Tabla/ Pakhawaj, Hindustani Shastriya Gayan and have a broad theoretical understanding of Kathak and related aspects).

Music courses

Classes for these courses are held on six days a week (except on the second Saturday) between 12 noon to 5 p.m.
  1. One-year Certificate Course (Tabla/Pakhawaj): Those who are talented & have an aptitude for playing percussion instruments, with sensitivity to rhythms should apply for this course.

    Eligibility:
      Age: 14 to 17 years, as on 1st June 2018.
    • Educational qualification: You should have completed class 6.

  2. Diploma Course (Tabla/Pakhawaj) – First year: This course is of 5 years' duration.

    Eligibility:
    • Age: 15 to 20 years, as on 1st June 2018.

    • Educational qualification: You should have completed Class 8.

    • Music Qualification: You should have minimum 1 year training certificate in Tabla/Pakhawaj

  3. Special Course in Vocal Music - First year: This course is of 3 years' duration. Those with a good grounding in vocal music can apply for this course.

    Eligibility:
    • Age criteria: 18 to 30 years, as on 1st June 2018.

    • Educational qualification: You should have a Senior Secondary school certificate or equivalent exam certificate.

Fees

  1. For Dance Courses:
    • Foundation course: Rs. 300/- p.m.

    • Diploma (Pass): Rs. 350/- p.m.

    • Diploma (Honours): Rs. 400/- p.m.

    • Post Diploma: Rs. 500/- p.m.

    • Refresher Course: Rs. 1000/- p.m.

    • For ICCR Scholarship holder: Rs. 5000/- per month.

  2. For Music Courses:
    • Certificate Course: Rs. 300/- p.m.

    • Diploma Course (Tabla/Pakhawaj): Rs. 500/- p.m.

    • Special Course in Vocal Music: Rs. 1000/- p.m.

Note: Above fees are to be paid on a 6-monthly basis, in July and January till the10th of that month.

Admission charges:
  1. Admission Fee: Rs. 300/- at the time of admission.

  2. Security Deposit (this will be refunded in case of no dues): Rs. 1000/- at the time of admission.

  3. Library Charges (this is non-refundable): Rs. 500/- at the time of admission.

Exam fees

The following exam fees must be deposited at the beginning of the session, in July.
  1. Foundation - 1st to 4th Year: Rs. 100/- .

  2. Foundaon -5th Year / Diploma (Pass) - 1st to 3rd Year: Rs. 200/- .

  3. Diploma (Hons.) - 1st & 2nd Year / Post Diploma - 1st Year: Rs. 300/-.

  4. Diploma (Hons.) –3rd Year / Post Diploma –2nd Year: Rs. 500/-.

  5. Certificate Course (Tabla / Pakhawaj): Rs. 100/- .

  6. Diploma Course (Tabla / Pakhawaj): Rs. 500/-.

  7. Special Course in Vocal Music: Rs. 500/-.

Important note: All payments are to be made through cheque payable to "Director, Kathak Kendra". An amount of Rs.500/- (Rupees Five Hundred only) will be charged for dishonoured cheques.

Freeships

Students who are awarded a Freeship for a course are exempt from paying the Tuition Fees. You are eligible to apply for the Fresship if your parents' or guardians' total monthly income is below or up to Rs.8,000/-. You will need to submit an income statement certified by a S.D.M. as supporting documentary proof of income. Note that if you fail to qualify in the half-yearly or annual exam, then you will no longer be eligible to avail the facility of Freeship.



Scholarships and Stipends

Scholarships and stipends are offered to the students in various courses, provided they fulfill the required attendance criteria and are not receiving any scholarship from another source (they can select, though, between the two).
  1. Foundation Course-5th Year Scholarship of Rs.500/- p.m. to top four students on the basis of last exam result.

  2. Diploma (Pass) Course-3rd Year Scholarship of Rs.500/- p.m. to top four students on the basis of last exam result.

  3. Diploma (Hons.) Course -1st Year Spend of Rs.500/- p.m. to all students.

  4. Diploma (Hons.) Course -2nd Year Spend of Rs.500/- p.m. to all students.

  5. Scholarship of Rs.1500/- p.m. to top three students on the basis of last exam result, in addition to the stipend.

  6. Diploma (Hons.) Course -3rd Year Spend of Rs.500/- p.m. to all students.

  7. Scholarship of Rs.2000/- p.m. to top three students on the basis of last annual exam result, in addition to the stipend.

  8. Post Diploma Course-1st Year Spend of Rs.700/- p.m. to all students.

  9. Post Diploma Course – 2nd Year Spend of Rs.700/- p.m. to all students.

  10. Scholarship of Rs. 2500/- p.m. to top two students on the basis of last exam result, in addition to the stipend.

Selection process

On scrutiny of the applications received, eligible candidates will be called for a pre-admission test. The results will be displayed on the notice board of the Kendra as well as at the official website. Those eligible based on the results will get admission the appropriate training course based on merit and availability of seats. Those selected for admission must complete all admission-related formalities by 18th July 2018.

    (i) 3 - Year Diploma (Hons) Course – 1st Year: 6th & 7th July, 2018.
    (ii) Year Post Diploma Course – 1st Year: 6th & 7th July, 2018.
    (iii) Refresher Course: 6th & 7th July, 2018.

For Music Courses:
(i) 1-Year Certificate Course (Tabla/Pakhawaj): 9th July, 2018.
(ii) 5-Year Diploma Course(Tabla/Pakhawaj)–1st Year: 9th July, 2018.
( iii) 3-Year Special Course in Vocal Music – 1st Year: 9th July, 2018.

Results date: 11th July, 2018.
