IntroductionVegetarian food is relished and consumed both by vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Generally in visiting a new place or on travel people prefer vegetarian foods as they are light on stomach. City dwellers have now made it a habit to visit such vegetarian restaurants at weekends for 'dining-out' and when the guests arrive. So It is good that we know about the best vegetarian restaurants in any town or city Let us see a few such good vegetarian restaurants in the city of Ernakulam .
BTH –Bharat HotelThis can be said to be a top restaurant for vegetarian lovers. Known earlier as Bharat Tourist Home, it is an established lodging hotel with excellent vegetarian restaurant since the sixties. It has undergone periodic maintenance and renovation and still keeps the combination of traditional charm and modern amenities. It is located in the heart of the city and easily approachable from Jos Junction, Pallimukku junction, MG Road, Boat Jetty, Marine Drive etc which are the main landmarks of the city.
It has two restaurants- Subhiksha and Kempu. We can have authentic Kerala meals in Subhiksha apart from the usual popular South Indian snacks. They serve a Buffet lunch too with a combined course. Kempu has a multi cuisine of South Indian and North Indian items. The chat items are favorite for children. The Masaal Dosa in BTH is a relish to taste. The BTH group has another Hotel and quality vegetarian restaurant with South Indian and North Indian cuisine at Maradu, on NH47 Cochin Bye-pass.
Due to its prominent location near to many shops and Malls, visitors and shoppers to the city visit the BTH for their food needs. It is a very apt place for evening or after noon snacks in weekends, as families can spend quality time in the Durbar Hall ground, Shiva Temple, taking leisurely stroll in the nearby parks enjoying the beautiful backwater scenery and view of Kochi harbor and Islands. Marine Drive is in proximity which is again suitable for a leisurely stroll enjoying the evening breeze. The service and hospitality is also very good. There is sufficient parking space too.

Sreekrishna InnLocated not far from Bharat Hotel on the Warriam Road, Sreekrishna Inn is a very good vegetarian restaurant which does not betray a hotel's usual blaring commercial appearance. It is more of a homely ambience. An old heritage house is converted to a quality restaurant. In their own line of advertising "Vegetarian restaurant in a colonial building plating north and south Indian, Jain and Chinese food.". There can be heavy rush during the peak lunch hours and weekends. Sometimes visitors may have to wait a bit. But the wait is worth. Visitors can have a very leisurely and peaceful lunch or dinner in a nice ambience of variety color and wall hangings. It is very much suitable to visit as family. The service also adds to the homely feeling. Jain food is also served on demand and hence very much suitable for those who do not take onion etc. The food is tasty and rate is quite affordable. A sumptuous meal may cost only near two hundred rupees.

3.Ambiswamy's Vegetarian restaurantThis is a normal vegetarian hotel simple but very neat and clean. Those who are lack on time can easily visit this restaurant. It is more or less an open restaurant with minimum essential roofing and side coverings. The menu is mostly South Indian items with popular snacks like Idli, Dosa, Uthappam, Vada etc. As there is a hospital nearby one may get some simple food items like Kerala Kanji (Rice porridge) and curd rice that are essential for convalescents . It is located at a very prime spot on the MG Road near Pallimukku Junctions. That only is the minus point as the road is always full of traffic and one needs expertise to take and park vehicle. The restaurant does not have a parking space of its own. The lunch hour can be crowded with employees from the nearby offices and shops and those visiting the two or three hospitals on the same road. The system is of prepaid billing. They serve food without compromising quality and taste. Ambiswamy's vegetarian restaurants have units also in Kaloor Opposite to Mathrubhumi and at highway junction Edappaaly, Near Lulu Mall which are very prominent locations.

A very simple and straight restaurant, they are serving mostly South India vegetarian food. It serves Kerala meals. One can have peaceful and leisurely eating there. There is an AC section too. There is parking space. Overall it is value for money.

5. Gokul Oottupura- Jos Junction Gokul restaurant is also located on the main thoroughfare MG Road at Jos Junction. It is standard vegetarian restaurant serving South Indian menu and serving North Indian and Chinese menu in the evenings. During week days it will be having the regular visitors from the nearby business and commercial premises and the casual visitors and shoppers. But on weekends it is a proper place for family dining-out, as the traffic will be quite less, vehicles can be parked in the by lanes and can have leisurely and peaceful eating with variety menu. The rates are quite affordable. Though we cannot classify it in the premium range, it is a good restaurant for vegetarian food lovers. Gokul Oottupura has become a popular brand name in vegetarian restaurants in Kochi. They have units in Panampilly Nagar and behind Shiva temple in the city.

Conclusion and OverviewThough Kochi (Eranakulam) city has many vegetarian restaurants, in this article only the top five restaurants which are located in the heart of the city and in proximity to one another have been mentioned. The logic is that most of the established Malls, Textile shops, Jewellery shops, Theatres, Hospitals, Travel agencies and lodging places are all located on the MG Road in the Pallimukku, Jos Junction and around and nearby area. The location is in vicinity to the Railway and Metro stations. So people are more probable to search for a restaurant in these areas. It is also a reason that even if one misses one restaurant he can easily reach another one listed above. Each of them is in walking distance from one another and can be easily guided to. So when visiting Kochi/Ernakulam try to enjoy your food at the above mentioned vegetarian restaurants and have a nice time .
Those vegetarian hotels in Ernakulam, given in the article are generally known. Among them one missing name is 'Hotel Woodlands', which is on the MG Road, and has been working for more than five decades. Similarly, the Bharath Cafe (Bharath Hotel) at Broadway is also worth mentioning. In the South Railway Station road also a vegetarian hotel is there (forgot the name), which also attract many people.
Now there are several hotels at Edappally and well as on the sides of National Highway Bypass, between Edappally and Vyttila.
Sri.Sankaran, thanks for the comment. You are right. There are other Vegetarian restaurants as you mentioned, like Woodlands, Bharat Cafe etc in Ernakulam.
However, as the article was only about five hotels, it was restricted to the five mentioned in the article. In fact Ernakulam has many more vegetarian restaurants located at many places in the city.
Kochi is the second largest city of Kerala after Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state. I had visited this beautiful city more than once. Of late, the city has become more expensive. But there are many good vegetarian restaurants on the MG Road (at the heart of the city), which are pocket-friendly and provide good South Indian vegetarian meal. The restaurants are more hygienic than similar restaurants of north India.
Further, Kochi is also known for sea-foods. There are many good restaurants in the vicinity of Fort Kochi which provide sea-foods at a reasonable price. Cheenavala located at NH Byepass is a good restaurant which provides good sea-food, but the price is on the higher side for middle-class people.
While thanking the author for this informative article, I would request him to write another article on good restaurants providing authentic sea-foods in Kochi.
