Has the latest news about NET, NEET and JEE to be conducted twice left you with too many unanswered questions? Are you confused about the new structure and how it will impact you? This article outlines the newly introduced system for these All India level entrance examinations.

According to an announcement made on 07/07/2018, by the Union HRD Minister, Shri Prakash Javadekar, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will henceforth organise the JEE (Mains), NET & NEET Entrance Exams. These entrance exams have so far been conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The change will come into place from the forthcoming academic session.

At a press conference held in the first week of July 2019, the union minister announced that the JEE (Mains) and NEET will be conducted twice a year, instead of once a year, as is the practice. This allows students the chance to appear for these competitive examinations twice and improves their chance of securing a seat in the prestigious IITs and Medical colleges of the country.

New date schedules for JEE, NEET & NET

According to the notification, the schedule for the JEE (Mains) is given as January & April 2019 and the calendar for NEET is February & May 2019. The National Eligibility Test (NET) is slotted to be conducted in December 2018.

The union minister added that students can appear for NEET & JEE in both schedules and their best score will be taken into consideration for admission.

It must be noted that no change has been announced in the JEE (Advanced) tests and IITs will continue to conduct them, as usual.

New examination pattern

Another new element that has been introduced to NEET, JEE (Mains) & NET exams is that they will now be computer-based tests. In order to prepare for the new pattern of exam, candidates will be able to participate in mock tests using their personal computer or from authorized computer centres, designated by the ministry, free of cost. The list of authorized computer centres where mock tests will be conducted will be announced soon.

No changes in pattern

The minister also stated that all other aspects of these tests remain unchanged. Which means that there will be no change in the syllabus, format of questions, language and the fee structure. Since they are computer-based exams, they will be conducted over a longer period of time, presumably over four to five days, with candidates assigned time-slots and test centres.

Advantage of computer-based tests

The advantages of the new mode of tests by the NTA is that it will cut down the risk of cheating since screen-sharing will not be permitted. And, since the tests are to be conducted online, the possibility of question paper leaks has also been removed.

In fact, the union minister stressed on this point when he said, "These examinations will use highly secured IT software and encryption to ensure delivery of tests just in time. This will ensure no leakages and other malpractices."

Practice test centres

The National Testing Agency will create a matrix of test practice centres, aimed at helping students belonging to rural belts, thereby ensuring that everybody gets equal opportunities to have a simulation of the new format, in the run-up of the actual test. Schools and engineering colleges in rural belts, having the right infrastructure will be identified and made available to students for these practice sessions. These educational institutions will remain open on weekends, starting from the third week of August 2018 to enable students to get practice in appearing for online tests. The facility will be available to all students, free of charge.
