Organic farming and its advantages

These days organic farming is getting a lot of attention. Many farmers who are having concern for the environment are shifting to this type of farming. The outputs of this farming are having a good demand and consumers are also ready to pay a little more for these products keeping the health benefits in view.

Organic farming is a technique of crop production without using pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics as well as growth hormones. With this organic farming, productivity of different products within the agro-ecosystem can be optimized. The main aim of organic production is to develop products that are sustainable and eco-friendly.The main reasons to farm organically are the environmental protection and to avoid using agricultural chemicals which are used in conventional farming. For the manufacture of these chemicals a lot of energy is required and if we avoid using these chemicals indirectly a lot of energy can be saved. This method of farming is found to be profitable. Organic foods are purchased by human beings for many different reasons. Many want to buy the products obtained from organic farming are free of chemical pesticides as they are grown without conventional fertilizers. Some may purchase these products the tastes of the products are good and original. Another positive point is the health benefits to the consumers.

Conventional vs Organic Farming

Conventional farming will use various chemical fertilizers for improving yields. Similarly, various insecticides and pesticides will be sprayed to protect crops. Generally, herbicides are used to stop the growth of weeds. These processes are harmful to the persons who are involved in the farming and also to the consumer as there may be some left outs of used chemicals in the products. Organic farming will involve the use of natural fertilizers for soil improvement. It depends more on the natural enemies for pests. Crop rotation technique will be used to conserve soil. Generally, weeds will be pulled out manually. These processes are not harmful to the persons involved in the farming and also to the consumer.

Benefits of organic farming

The organic production is advisable as it has the following benefit.
  • Protect the environment in a better way
  • Soil degradation and erosion will be minimized
  • This method will decrease pollution problems
  • Biological productivity will be optimized
  • Soil fertility will be maintained for long time
  • Biological diversity will be maintained within the system
  • Materials and resources will be recycled to the greatest extent possible
  • This will rely more on renewable resources in locally organized agricultural systems

Details of organic farming

The details are as follows
  • In organic production, design and management of the production system are critical. Selection of items is very important. The products should complement each other. Crop rotation is to be followed to avoid the land becoming ineffective.
  • During the change over from conventional products to organic products, the yields may be lower than conventional yields. But after three to five years, the organic yields will increase.
  • Some insects and disease pests are very dangerous to organic farming. The nature of the problems caused by these insects will vary from region to region. These days more organically approved bio pesticides become available.
  • The yields suitable to market from organic crops are less than non-organic crop yields. The materials which can't be used as it is can be used for making some food products like jams, jellies etc. which will add value to the product.
  • Organic products will cost more than non-organic products. Prices are negotiable and will fluctuate with local and global supply and demand.

Organic farming is going to attain a very prominent place in the coming days as the importance of environmental protection is increasing. The consumers are also showing the inclination for these products as they are safe and healthy when compared to conventional forming products. The land will also get a higher strength and will be useful for long
