How to start a teaching career with Teach for India fellowship program 2019-2021

Are you searching for a fellowship program with a stipend to teach in a school in India? This article provides complete information about an opportunity to teach children in low-income schools in India through the Teach for India fellowship program 2019-2021. Details of the stipend, work profile, eligibility criteria and online application procedure have been provided.

Teach for India, an organization which provides education for underprivileged children invites applications from graduates for a teaching fellowship. Working professionals are also welcome to apply. Only those willing to be wholly committed to teaching full-time for two years should apply.

Those who are unable to join the Fellowship program at present can apply later, informing the Foundation of their interest via email (see contact details at the end of this article).

About the fellowship

  1. The work profile: You will be expected to be committed to teaching children from Class 2 to Class 8 on a full-time basis at a low-income Govt. private school. Subjects to be taught include Maths, English, Social Studies and Science.
  2. The location: You will stay and teach in one of these cities - Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru. You will have to work as per specific school hours for six days a week. You also need to attend the training sessions as per the schedule which is given for the city.
  3. The aim: Your goal as a teacher is not only to educate a child but also values and to ensure that the child achieves academic goals which are developed in partnership with parents, teachers & local community members.
  4. The training: You will undergo a 5-week residential training program. Under the guidance of a program manager, you will develop leadership skills and understand how to teach in a classroom setup. The training will include how to plan lessons, content instructions, etc. You will be given the opportunity to practice their teaching at a Summer School during Institute training. Further, during your entire two-year stint, you will receive strong support through online and offline training sessions, with both technical and emotional support.
  5. The payment: You will receive a monthly salary of Rs. 19,000/-. In case you need to relocate to a city from your own home city, you will get a housing allowance between Rs.5,500/- to Rs.10,000/-, depending on the city in which you will stay. You will also get an allowance for school supplies.
  6. The future: Opportunities with fulfilling careers abound after you complete the two-year Fellowship program. You can become a freelance consultant to design curriculum or launch your own educational venture as an entrepreneur. You can avail of opportunities to study abroad or teach in highly reputed institutions and universities in India or other countries. You will get mentoring from the Teach for India Foundation to establish your career.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria: There is no age limit to apply for the Fellowship.
  2. Nationality: You should be a citizen of India or a foreign national of Indian origin. In the case of the latter, you should apply for an OCI card to the Ministry of Home Affairs. To apply for the OCI card, please go to the Online OCI Registration Form. Note that those who are foreign citizens who are not of Indian origin cannot apply for the Fellowship.
  3. Educational Qualification: You should have completed all coursework required for your undergraduate degree (Bachelor's degree equivalent) from an accredited college or university by the last week of May 2019. All your graduate/postgraduate certificates will be reviewed before the decision for admission to the Fellowship program is taken.
  4. Language Skills: You must have fluency in the English language. This is an essential criterion because you will be teaching in English-medium schools and training modules will be conducted in English. Knowing the local regional language will be helpful, but is not a mandatory criteria.

How to apply and selection process

Applications will be accepted online via the 'Sign Up' button at the Teach for India official website.

Once you submit your application you will receive a link to a one-hour online test called AMCAT. Know more about AMCAT.

The test focuses on English language and decision making skills. It must be completed within four days from the date you submit your application and your application will not be considered to be complete until you complete the test.

If required, after the AMCAT test you will be invited to attend a 30-minute phone interview with a team member with follow-up questions to get details that may help in the evaluation process.

The final stage of the selection process is a personal interaction at an Assessment Centre. You will be required to teach a 5-minute lesson, take part in a group discussion and complete a short problem-solving activity. Additionally, there will be a personal interview of about one hour with a staff member. For candidates who are based abroad and unable to be present at the Assessment Centres, an interview and other relevant activities will be scheduled over Skype.

Overall, the purpose of the in-depth selection process is to assess your leadership skills, evaluate the qualities of critical thinking and determine your perseverance and commitment to the mission of the Fellowship program.

The first deadline to apply is 2nd September 2018.
The second deadline to apply is 21st October 2018.
