7 indications that you're not going to succeed in life

Is success playing hide and seek with you? Are you failing to find success? Your personal traits must be holding you back and preventing you from succeeding in life. Change things about yourself to become successful in your ventures.

Our ideas of success may be different, but nearly everyone wants to succeed in life. But, success is not something that is given to us on a platter. We have to work towards it. The journey can sometimes be treacherous, but whoever said success comes easy.

Despite wanting to succeed, in whatever we do, many of us fail to scale the heights of success. Our dreams of making it big, remain just dreams. So, how is it that some people succeed, and some fail at it. The answer perhaps lies in the way successful people conduct themselves.

Rather than define the things people who succeed do, I'll describe the traits that those who lag behind lack. Check to see if you identify with any of them, and you'll find your reasons for lagging behind.

Let's find out which traits could possibly be holding you back.

You are unenthusiastic

When was the last time you volunteered to do something that had to be done? It's said that actions speak, and when you hesitate to act, your lack of enterprise becomes evident. To succeed means to stand out from the crowd. And this is possible when you are openly ambitious. Your lack of vigour and aggressiveness proves to be your nemesis

If you want to ride on the waves of success you'll need to change the way you function. The first step would be to rise above your weaknesses by becoming assertive; you need to demonstrate a killer-instinct and do things that you wouldn't ordinarily do.

Let me warn you, I am not propagating this as the perfect recipe for success; there will be failures because you're still learning the ropes. But, keep at it and your perseverance will certainly bear fruit.

You're a maven procrastinator

You not only show no interest in new projects, you procrastinate doing things that are your responsibility. You have legitimate excuses for all your delays. You have a knack of postponing jobs on your 'to do' list – you can never find the time to work on them. You shelve projects until the next day or the next week, but your tomorrows never come.

This is just one example, there are many other ways through which your procrastination manifests itself.

If there is ever a contest to identify those who'll 'not succeed in life', this attribute will put you the lead in the race.

Procrastination pushes you into the dark dungeons from where the future looks bleak. It can be a comfortable space to be in, but that comfort is temporary – it actually keeps you from life's successes.

You won't move ahead in life unless you try. You cannot sit idle and hope for good luck to be favourable. You build your luck through dedication and timely intervention. Success can be yours when you realise that the goals and targets are yours to complete. You move ahead once you meet all your goals.

You have no goals

The word 'goal' does not exist in your dictionary. The setting of goals is important because they provide direction. You begin planning your moves to achieve those goals, you become disciplined, determined and dedicated. In the absence of goals, you fail to traverse through the maze that leads to success.

Knowing what you want from life is a goal. Wanting to reach a certain position, in your career, is a goal. The setting of goals is about you defining your own future – you become your own tarot card reader, your own astrologer. It is about deciding your achievements before you attain them.

Goals help build self-confidence, you begin believing in your abilities, you begin pushing yourself to achieve success. Setting goals can open doors to a whole new world for you. So, set yourself goals, short-term and long-term. Next, formulate a doable plan to achieve those goals. Remember, setting goals is not the purpose here, you need to conquer them as well.

Failures scare you

You are scared of failing and that is what prevents you from exploring and experimenting. Keep in mind that failures do not define you. If you want to touch success you will need to come out of your comfort zone and take risks. Failure is just an equivocal term designed to scare you and put you off the track.

Don't believe in this concept of failure. You do not fail when you attempt something; you either triumph or you learn. Treat every 'defeat' as an opportunity from which to learn. And circumvent failures by giving every project your very best, don't let the fear of failure defeat you, even before you start. Failures will be a part of your journey, but what makes it worthwhile is that you can rewrite that part of your ride, with successes that follow.

You please people

People pleasers attempt to please everyone around them. The problem with this is that you can never keep everyone happy. And, that is just one problem with such behaviour, the other being that you end up compromising your personal interests. It is your life, and you must come first. The decisions and choices you make must be yours. You cannot survive for long being another's stooge. There is no scope for expressing yourself when you try to please others. You stunt your growth and either resign to your fate or become depressed and dejected.

Some people believe that pleasing people high-up in the hierarchy would help them carve their own success story. If you want to achieve something in life, start by recognising your aspirations. You cannot achieve success by being a people pleaser, because someone down the line you'll get trodden over.

You rely on fate

You leave everything to chance and believe that luck will favour you. Good fortune is a result of hard labour. Successful people hold untold stories of struggles, failures and difficult journeys – it is not an easy ride. There is a lot of sweat and toil involved. They do not leave anything to chance, they strive to succeed, and that's their secret.

If you want to succeed, you'll have to up your game – recognise the flaws, correct your approach and give the task your 100%, a little more than that if it's possible. You have to take things into your own hands – decide and do what is right. You'll probably face multiple roadblocks, but when you have the destination in view, you will learn to navigate your way through.

You don't have the right attitude

Your attitude helps you to define your journey; it carves the path towards success or disaster. A positive attitude constitutes the right attributes for success. A will to succeed, inner strength, self-belief and a sense of responsibility paired with hard work, sincerity and dedication are the perfect ingredients for success. All these qualities lie within you, you need to polish them and you're ready to go. Your attitude is definitely one of the major contributors to the direction your life takes.

Final lesson

On a concluding note, I'd like to add that changing the course of your life is in your hands. It's never too late to do a self-appraisal and change your ways. Do you identify with the behaviours described here? If you are waiting for your success story to be written, then it's time for you to change your personality.

Identify the problem areas in your character and change those habits; doing so will set you on the right course, that leads you to success. You have to stop nurturing personality traits that are impeding your growth.

I hope this article helps you identify your problem area. I'd also like to read your views on this piece. So, do leave a comment below, and share the article with your friends.

An excellent article highlighting the deficiencies which are the main reasons for our failures.

Every person is having positive as well as negative traits. While the positive traits help him in achieving his objectives and getting progress in life, the negative traits will only fail him in his endeavours.

People, who have dominantly positive traits in their life progress ahead.

It is also true that acquiring positive traits requires discipline and hard work while negative traits do not require any effort to inculcate themselves.

In essence, the prudent people always suppress their negative attributes and develop only the positive ones and that is the reason why they are successful in getting their objectives met.

This article deals with the issues hindering the attainment of success. The author has highlighted the inherent weakness of the executor which if handled at the initial stage can reverse his failure and ultimately achieve the success in his assigned task.
However, I would like to add an essential component in the accomplishment of any objective and that is exploration leading to success. Exploration would include all ideas in a given project that should be touched upon before it is being implemented. As for an example, a steel industry is to be set up, he would like to add human resources having a vast experience in this field, who with the limited resources can transform massive wealth generation. Initially, such recruitment of manpower would prove to be a mind-boggling task, but such attainment is not difficult. Once there is an infusion of right manpower, the objective of attaining the goal becomes more clear.
The other aspect in this context is the periodic revision of the project taking all variables into consideration which will yield huge growth. This means that the executor apart from being enthusiastic should be an excellent dreamer so as to achieve success.

An excellent article to be read by people who 'think' they are doing everything but they are just 'unlucky'. A lot of times, it is the human factor wherein we think we are the best and we hate to be criticized even if it is constructive criticism that will enable us to be better or be successful.

Glad that the author has mentioned enthusiasm first. Often we see that people have a spring in their steps and are enthusiastic but this wanes off once they pass from the dream/blackboard stage to real life and its challenges. Enthusiasm and passion to complete a task should be constant and almost infectious to be successful in a big task or getting the first job etc.

With regards to procrastination, some people genuinely have 'starting trouble' or get confused when they see the mound of the task to be completed. They need someone (a friend, mentor or teacher) to nudge them to kick-start a project or major task at hand.

People often give up on goals as they get older, get buried under a heap of responsibility or in the face of adversity. This should not be the case. Everyone at all points in life should have a goal or a target to work towards; only the goal-post or playing circumstances should change.

Failures are the best real-life learning experiences that no book or master or Guru can teach us. Every failure is a sure stepping stone provided we make an effort to learn from it rather than just give up.

Pleasing higher-ups or the boss would work for the short term but this undermines the importance of self-confidence and skill related to the job. Such people who rely on pleasing others find that they are struggling when there is a change of place or the people (a newcomer vs the people whom they are used to).

For people who depend on fate and good luck, they should realise that good luck is nothing but hard work + opportunity. Being proactive with a positive attitude rather than arrogance or over-confidence will help one to succeed.

I would say, we should be our own staunch critics, this would enable us to look at what we have done so far from a different perspective and to pick up the errors that we never knew that we had committed in the first place.

Lastly, one needs to be smart also and constantly assess the situation with heightened awareness because hardwork alone does not ensure success always. One needs to be adaptable, able to read the signs and the changing equations so that we find ourselves on the path to success.

But it is also possible that the one - who is unenthusiastic, who procrastinates, who have no goals, who doesn't bother about success or failure, who doesn't please anybody but everybody gets pleased by him, who doesn't rely on fate but strongly believes in God - is also making a progress in a direction which is not recognized by many, the path of spirituality.

Surprisingly, the road that brings you into this world is the same road that takes you out. The only difference is that to go out, you have to travel in the opposite direction. Likewise, every attribute that brings success in this world becomes a hindrance for those of you want to go back (to the source).

It is an excellent article and a must read for everyone. Many of us are trying to reach somewhere but not able to succeed because we carry certain traits.

If you constantly keep talking about yourself, it is very likely that the attitude is because the success is not within your reach. They in this kind of unique way seek attention from others. It is a way to earn respect and honor from others. It is obvious that every human being desires earning some respect from their fellow beings. However, constantly talking is not going to do the trick. It is a mere waste of time. You can't force others to respect you. You need to earn your honor. These people feel that success means earning respect. Until they tell others how cool and great they are, others will not know about it. It is the reason they keep constantly talking about themselves.

These people are confident and conceded at the same time. They are insecure. Insecurity and success do not go hand in hand. If you have to become successful, you need to bid goodbye to your insecurity. Only when you bid goodbye to your disgusting and annoying attribute, you are going to learn that you need to work hard to achieve success. When you achieve success, you are definitely going to earn respect and honor from others. You don't have to tell people how great or cool you are. It is because they will definitely find out for themselves.

Stop complaining about everything. There is nothing wrong with you or the circumstances. Everything is right and thus fits well. Just channelize your energy and try to solve the puzzles. Do it without complaining. It is because complaining drains away too much precious energy. Instead of spending time complaining about anything and everything, it is better to look into the matter and solve the riddles at the earliest. Think big, stop complaining and work hard to achieve success.

An interesting article by the author.

In my view the biggest enemy of our success in life is our lethargy. The laziness and resistance to work and not to initiate an action is the root cause of our failures in life. We think a lot and fantasize enormously but when it comes to perform we take a back seat. It means our mind and body are not in resonance to each other. We are not able to fix our paths in life and do not know what is beneficial to us.

The success and progress in the life requires a clear mind with determined and focused aporoach for solving the problems and intention of doing hard work persistently till objectives are achieved.

A useful article explaining the things that need to be checked if someone does not get success in life. In this regard, I would also like to add about one of the strategic analysis tool called "SWOT analysis". SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. It is one of the techniques used by organizations to understand where they stand and how to improve from the current situation. This technique can very well be used by individual people to know their strengths and weaknesses.

While using SWOT analysis one should be realistic about the details listed on. It will help us to clearly identify the internal and external factors contributing to our life. This analysis will help us manage risk and identify the areas where we need to focus on. An extensive use of this tool will help in proper planning in each phase of life.

You are right, and I believe that success does not happen by accident. You design it yourself, through sedulous hard work, persistence and determination and making changes in your life by adapting to new situations and learning new skills. Success comes to those who forego things, to chase their dreams. It is a result of sheer dedication and constant work. You need to keep working on your success story, little pieces put together is what brings you success. There are no shortcuts to it.

I am reminded of a quote I read on someone's tee-shirt, it said – “Success is not easy, and is certainly not for the lazy".

Sheo Shankar,
I agree with your view and would like to add some more points. Success comes to those who work for it. Success isn't something that drops into your lap. There is always a lot of hard work and dedication involved.

Success requires commitment. You have to remain committed to your goals. That is the key because when there is commitment, everything else follows. You strive to achieve your goal - it becomes the driving force.

The next important thing is to enjoy the journey. Take the good and the bad in your stride. Don't bask in your laurels and don't fret over your failures. Make the journey memorable. Love what you do, and you'll find it easier to reach your goals.

Last but not the least, have a plan. Don't work without a plan. Know what you want to do and how you will do it. Be clear about each step, don't start on your journey without a strategy. Have a Plan B for when you stumble.
