How to be a science storyteller through DST Govt. of India AWSAR 2018

Are you pursuing PhD or Post Doctoral Fellow in science and technology? This article provides complete information on an opportunity to write a research story for the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India's Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) and win cash awards through submission of entries latest by 30th September 2018.

Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) is an initiative of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The focus of AWSAR is to encourage PhD and Post Doctoral Fellows to present Indian research stories of Science, Technology and Innovation which are currently being pursued in India in an interesting format which would be easy to understand. The aim, as per the official notification, is to strengthen the ecosystem of science communication and inculcate scientific temperament in society.

Eligibility requirements

Only those fulfilling these criteria are eligible to submit entries –
  1. You must be a citizen of India.
  2. You should be pursuing PhD for the last two years or are a Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF) in any stream of Science and Technology (S&T) from a recognized University/R&D Institute. You can submit the entry within the tenancy period of your research.
  3. The story which you submit as an entry must be related to the research which you are pursuing.

Note: Past applicants can re-apply if the eligibility criteria are met, but a past award winner of the Award cannot submit a research story a second time in the same category.

Award categories and cash prizes

For Ph.D. Scholars

  1. First prize: Rs.1,00,000/- (one prize).
  2. Second prize: Rs.50,000/- (one prize).
  3. Third prize: Rs.25,000/- (one prize).
  4. 100 selected entries: Rs.10,000/- each, along with a certificate of appreciation.

For Post Doctoral Fellows

  1. One outstanding story: Rs.1,00,000/-.
  2. 20 selected entries: Rs.10,000/- each along with a certificate of appreciation.

The award presentation

The winners will receive the awards on 28th February at the National Science Day event. Additionally, all award winners can attend a Science Film Training Workshop to be organized by Vigyan Prasar.

Selection process

All the entries submitted for AWSAR will be evaluated by a panel constituted by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The panel will include eminent scientists and science communicators. The article submitted as an entry should be wholly original. Also, it should not have been previously published elsewhere, or simultaneously sent for publication elsewhere.

What the panel will be looking for is accuracy and clarity of details as well as being resourceful and insightful. The entry should bring out the significance and importance of the research and should be both compelling to read and, at the same time, easy to understand.

The article should indicate a complete research story in simple language without including intricate graphs, figures or complicated formulae. Only self-explanatory infographics may be included if required to convey some information in an effective manner.

How to submit entries

It is advisable to go through the FAQs at http://www.awsar-dst.in/faq and the guidelines at http://www.awsar-dst.in/guidelines before submitting your entry.

All articles should be submitted online only at the official AWSAR-DST website.

You first need to register your name to submit the story. Once you receive a confirmation email about the registration at your registered email ID, you can then log in and fill the entry form to submit your story. It is suggested that one hard copy can also be submitted to the office for their records.

Article requirements

  1. The article should be 1000-1500 words, submitted on A4-size paper in MS Word format.
  2. There should be a margin of 2.5 cm on all sides, single column.
  3. The font should be Times New Roman font and in font size 12.
  4. There should be 1.5 line spacing .
  5. You must mention the theme and the title of the paper along with your name, affiliation, and contact details in the article.
  6. The submitted article must have a declaration that the article is original and has not been previously published elsewhere. Note that if an entry is found to be plagiarized, the applicant will be debarred from future participation in AWSAR.

The last date to submit entries for AWSAR is 30th September 2018.
