Indian Universities offering distance education courses in Population Studies

The subject of population studies deals with the various aspects of demography, distribution of population and various related aspects. In India, some Universities offer this course at UG, PG and PhD levels but only two Universities offer correspondence courses on this subject. Learn details from this article.

The population of India has surpassed 125 crores. In the country, there are many states, union territories, different geographical units, communities and tribes. So there is a need of professionals who are trained in demography and utilizing various tools to analyze the demographic pattern of a country, of a state, of a district, an area or of a community in India. The students of Population Studies are scientifically trained to analyze the demographic pattern of a geographical unit or of a community.

In India, earlier the students of Geography used to study Population Studies at Undergraduate level as a part of Human Geography. At the Post-Graduate level, the students of Geography had to study this subject as one paper out of ten papers. But of late the number of universities offering Undergraduate, Post-graduate, Diploma and Post-Graduate Diploma in Population Studies, has been steadily increasing. Nowadays, some (not many) universities of India offer various courses on Population Studies at various levels (after X+II). But even now, very few universities and deemed-to-be universities offer this course by correspondence/distance learning. As far as the present author knows, only two universities/deemed-to-be universities offer this course by correspondence/distance learning mode. Let us know.

From IIPS Mumbai

International Institute of Population Studies (IIPS), Mumbai is the most prestigious institute in India in the field of demographic studies. The institute was founded in 1956 to by the joint collaboration among United Nations, the Government of India and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, for teaching, training and conducting research in the area of population studies. The institute has become a deemed university in August 1985. The objectives of the institute include to train students from India and other countries in demography and related fields, to undertake scientific research on population problems and to collect, organize and disseminate demographic information about the population of India and other countries of the world.

The institute offers M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies, M.Sc. in Biostatistics & Demography, Master of Population Studies (MPS), M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Population Studies. The MPS teaching is conducted both as regular, classroom course and through distance learning.

The Master of Arts programme in Population Studies by distance learning offered by IIPS has 150 seats. Any Graduate in any Social Science or Science discipline with 55% in aggregate can apply for this distance learning course. Candidates working in various fields are given preference. The institute follows the norms of the Government of India relating to reservation.

From Annamalai University DDE

Annamalai University was established in 1928 at Chidambaram in northern Tamil Nadu by Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar. It is a UGC-approved university and accredited with 'A' Grade by NAAC in 2014. The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of the University was established in 1979 and it presently offers more than two hundred different programmes of study. It has study centres in almost all states of India and in every district of Tamil Nadu.

The DDE of Annamalai University offers various programmes on Population Studies by correspondence. These are:-
  1. B.A in Population Studies: The eligibility for admission in this course is Higher Secondary or equivalent from any recognized Board or Diploma in Teacher Education. This course is offered in English and in Tamil.
  2. M.A. in Population Studies: The eligibility for admission in this course is Graduation in any discipline from a recognized University. This course is offered in both English and in Tamil.
  3. Diploma in Population and Health Management: This course is offered to Graduates and in-service candidates including teachers and personnel working in population-related research institutions or voluntary agencies who may be non-Graduates.This Diploma is also offered in English and in Tamil.

Final few words

Population Studies is an emerging subject in India and it has tremendous potential in the Government sector, NGOs and in various other sectors like life insurance. During the last 10-15 years, some universities have started teaching this subject at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, but the correspondence courses in Population Studies are offered by only these two University/Institute in India. It is expected that considering the potential and necessity, IGNOU and other Universities will also offer correspondence courses in Population Studies in the coming years.
