Overview of Distance Education from Bangalore University

Bangalore university is one of the oldest universities in India and one of the top and reputed universities in Bangalore offering a varied range of courses for students with various benefits. The Board of Distance Education for correspondence courses was started in 1976. The university provides a wide scope for students to develop skills in areas of their learning. The distinctive courses of study offered by the Directorate lead to undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, diploma and certificate courses. The university provides quality education as per its statements of goals and vision.

The correspondence courses are of three categories:
Correspondence Scheme: The students who opt for this scheme should have a minimum educational qualification. The university provides with study materials.

Open University Scheme: The students who choose this option need not have any educational qualifications. They should have completed 18 years of age as on 1st June of that academic year. The students need to attend contact programs/ classes conducted by the university which will be intimated by messages or media. The students would be provided with study materials. The fee structure for this scheme is slightly higher.

External Scheme: Under this scheme, the students need to have minimum qualification for admission to each course. The students are not provided with any study material.

Undergraduate Courses offered by Bangalore University

Qualification Requirements for undergraduate courses: The candidate should have completed 18 years of age as on 1st June of that academic year. The students would have passed the Pre-University Examination of Karnataka or any equivalent examination of 10+2 scheme.

  1. Bachelor of Arts (B.A): BA is a bachelor's undergraduate degree course of three years duration. The interested students can choose their subject from a range of disciples, which includes English language, history, economics, sociology etc. The program enables the students to understand the subject and widen their knowledge in arts and humanities. The course provides ample scope for varied professions in the areas of advertising, publishing to education
  2. Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com): B.Com is one of the popular undergraduate degree courses of three years duration. The course aims at providing managerial skills to the students with competence in the subject. The program is designed to prepare the students to choose a career in commerce and grow professionally. The correspondence course in B.Com is approved by all the universities of India. The curriculum caters to the needs of students with easy learning systems and provides a wide range of opportunities for them to study further or seek employment in organizations
  3. Bachelor of Business Management (BBM): The degree course in Business management is a three-year degree course. The students would be exposed to the concepts of business and the principles of management. The course provides the students with in-depth knowledge in the subject and prepares them for a future career. The students should have passed PUC or 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized university

Postgraduate Correspondence Courses offered by Bangalore University

  1. Master of Arts ( M.A) : The postgraduate degree in arts is of two years duration, offering specialization in Kannada, English, Hindi, Telugu, history, economics, political science, sociology. The medium, philosophy, of instruction, is English/Kannada. The candidate should have completed a degree in B.A/B.Sc / B.Com from a recognized university with 50% marks in the relevant subject
  2. Master of Commerce (M.Com) : M.Com degree is a postgraduate program of two years duration. The course provides higher studies in commerce stream. The candidate aspiring for the course should have completed B.Com degree examination from a recognized university with minimum 50% marks in aggregate in commerce stream in the degree course
  3. Master of Science (M.Sc): The course Master of Science in Mathematics is offered by the university, which is of two years duration. The students are provided with a higher level of learning in Mathematics. The interested student opting for M.Sc in Mathematics should have completed B.SC degree from a recognized university or equivalent degree with 50% marks in aggregate in Mathematics.
  4. Master of Arts (M.A) in Sanskrit and French: Masters degree in Arts in Sanskrit and French is of two years duration, which enables students to gain extensive knowledge in the subjects. The candidates aspiring for the course should have completed B.A/B.Com/B.Sc degree from a recognized university with 55% marks in the language concerned. Students who have passed the Sahitya examination can register for the master's degree course in Sanskrit

Diploma Courses

Bangalore University of distance education also offers courses in applied nutrition and dietetics of one-year duration. The medium of instruction is English. The aspiring candidate should have passed PUC or equivalent examination with home science/chemistry as the optional subject at the PUC level.

Certificate courses

Courses are also offered through correspondence in Kannada, Nutrition and Dietetics for a one-year duration. The candidate should have passed SSLC or equivalent examination.

Application Process

The candidates can obtain the application form and prospectus by paying the application fee of Rs. 550/- at the Directorate of Correspondence Course and Distance education Office at the notified branch of SBM( State Bank of Mysore). The application form can also be downloaded from the website given below. The students need to submit the fully filled form along with all the necessary documents and copies of marks carks within the due dates. The incomplete applications will be rejected. For all other detailed information, students have to check the Directorate board notice, website and through SMS. The application form can be downloaded online. The Students have to pay the application fee by Crossed A/C payee Demand Draft, obtained from any of the nationalized banks. It has to be drawn in favour of the Finance Officer, Bangalore University, Bangalore and payable at State Bank of India, Bangalore. The name of the student, address, course and telephone no has to be written on the reverse side of the demand draft.
