Overview of Indira Gandhi National Open UniversityThe Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in the year 1985, under the Act of Parliament to provide education to individuals, to build an education society in the country. It is located in Maidan Garhi, Delhi. The university has 67 regional centres. The university is named after former Prime Minister of Indira Gandhi with the motto of IGNOu being 'The People's University'. The university strives to increase the enrollment ratio by offering distance education with high- quality education. IGNOU is a Public, Central University started with a budget of Rs. 20 million. The Chancellor of the university is the President of India. IGNOU is run by the central government of India and is one of the largest universities in the world. There are about 4 million students enrolled in the IGNOU. The IGNOU University was founded to provide education to the Indian population through distance education. Presently IGNOU has millions of students enrolled in India and in countries across the world. Divisions of IGNOU for AdministrationIGNOU has eleven divisions within the university to take care of all the administrative activities. These include the Academic and coordination division, Administrative Division, Construction and Maintenance, Computer division, International division, Finance and Accounts Division, Library and documentation division, Material production and distribution, planning and development division, regional services division, Students evaluation division, and student registration division.
IGNOU Research UnitsThe Research Unit was established in 2008 with the objective of conducting the research council and research committee meetings for developing policies and for conducting research activities. It is also engaged in conducting workshops/seminars on research methodology for part-time and full-time research students. It enables discipline-based research and facilitates systematic research. It helps in registering the full-time and part-time MPhil and PhD students and also monitors them. It enrols research teaching Assistants for conducting research and training.
Regional CentresThe regional centres across the country act as the resource centre for all practical purposes; they are the centres for training coordinators, counsellors and other functionaries. The centres are the venue for the students for expressing their responses related to particular subjects. Random checking of students assignments is done at the centres.
