About the university

Burdwan University is one of the prominent universities in West Bengal having its campus at Golapbag in Burdwan district. The university started its journey in 1960 and presently offering post graduate studies in 22 disciplines. There are around 100 colleges spanning over five districts of West Bengal affiliated to the university.

The university is offering its distance education program in 9 disciplines at the post graduate level and also offering a part time MBA for working professionals. The post graduate programs are offered through 10 study centers in different districts and 1 study center in Kolkata, but the classes of part time MBA are offered only at the university campus at Golapbag.

Courses offered for post graduate studies through distance mode

  • M.A in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, and Mathematics
  • M.Sc in Computer Science
  • M.Com in Commerce


Duration

Duration of all the post graduate courses is 2 years.

Medium of instructions and examinations

Keeping in mind the vernacular of the state and to give opportunity to students living at remote places of West Bengal where the subject of English is often neglected, the university provides the study materials only in Bengali for the subjects of History, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Bengali and Political Science.

For the subjects of Mathematics, English, Computer Science and Commerce the study materials can be in English also based on the choice of the students.

Students can write the examinations in English also for the subjects of History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sanskrit where options will be there to choose the language of writing.

For Mathematics, Computer Science and Commerce there is no option of choosing the language and students have to write the examinations in English only.

While writing the Sanskrit examination, students can choose Hindi or Sanskrit also along with the usual choice of English or Bengali.

Eligibility criteria for admission to post graduate courses

For admission to the post graduate courses in English, Bengali, Sanskrit, Political Science, Philosophy, History, Mathematics and Commerce the candidate must fulfill any of the criteria mentioned below.

  • If the candidate is an honors graduate in the specific subject chosen for post graduate studies, then the candidate must complete graduation with at least a 2nd class (less than 60% score), and has to complete the graduation in 10+2+3 or 11+3 pattern from a UGC recognized university
  • If the candidate is a pass graduate completing the education in 10+2+3 pattern, then the candidate must score 30% marks in that specific subject, intended to study in the post graduate level, provided the total marks for that subject in graduation is 300
  • If the candidate has taken admission in honors degree but becomes unsuccessful in keeping the honors paper because of securing less marks than what is stipulated and completes the graduation with pass degree, then the graduate must score 35% marks in aggregate in the honors paper to become eligible for admission to the post graduate level
  • If the candidate is a pass graduate and after that the candidate has completed a Special B.A, then the candidate must score 30% marks in that specific subject provided the total marks for that subject in Special B.A is 300
  • If the candidate is a pass graduate and completed the graduation in 10+2+2 or 10+1+3 or 11+3 pattern and subsequently completes a 1 year Bridge Course in that specific subject intended to study in the post graduate level, then the candidate must score 40% marks in that subject provided the total marks for that subject is 300


For admission to the post graduate course in Computer Science, the candidate must fulfill any of the criteria mentioned below.

  • The candidate may have a B.Sc honors degree in Computer Science/ Bachelor of Computer Applications degree/ Bachelor of Engineering degree/ B.Sc honors degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics or Electronics where Computer Science must be taken up in the combination of subjects
  • The candidate may have the DOEACC-A level course completion certificate
  • The candidate may have a PGDCA from the West Bengal State Council of Technical Education


Course fees for post graduate studies

There is a variation in the fee structure depending on the choice of study center and the university from where the candidates have completed their graduation. The course fee structure of different subjects is given below.

  • M.A in Mathematics : Rs.7700 - 8400
  • M.A in English, Bengali, Sanskrit, Political Science, Philosophy, History and Commerce: Rs.5700- 6400
  • M.Sc in Computer Science: Rs.11200 - 11900


Personal Contact Programs

The personal contact program, known as PCP, is a face to face interactive session between the students and the professor. When the students require clarification about any subject, then only these programs are arranged. These programs are conducted at all the study centers and the students should be in touch with their respective study center to know the details.

MBA programs offered through distance mode

The university is offering the MBA program with the following specializations:-

  • MBA in Marketing Management
  • MBA in Financial Management
  • MBA in Human Resource Management
  • MBA in System & Operations Management
  • MBA in Risk & Insurance Management


Eligibility criteria for admission to MBA programs

To become eligible for applying in the MBA programs the candidate must complete the graduation in 10+2+3 pattern from a recognized university and have the qualifying aptitude test score of CMAT/CAT/MAT or other recognized aptitude test for management studies.

If the candidate doesn't have the qualifying score of any of the recognized aptitude tests, then the candidate must appear for the entrance test conducted by the Burdwan University and successfully complete it with the required marks.

All candidates with the qualifying score of the aptitude tests, including the Burdwan University entrance test qualifiers, need to appear for a group discussion (GD) and personal interview (PI). The candidates will be selected according to their performance in both group discussion and personal interview.

Course fees for the MBA programs

A registration fee of Rs.200/- is required for students who have completed graduation from other universities. The course fees for the MBA program is Rs.15000/- per semester, along with this the examination fee is Rs.1000/- per semester.
